Credit card international question

I have a travel credit card that does not have any fees for using the card internationally. While I've been in Europe though, when using the card, I have the option to pay in the local currency or in USD.

I would assume it's better to pay in the local currency, but does anyone know for sure?

Local currency. Always.

Paying in USD is called dynamic currency conversion and is never to your benefit.

(at machines read the options really carefully - sometimes the wording can be confusing as to which option is local currency and which is US$/your home currency)
