Get the book "Bed and Blessings" by Walsh from your local bookstore or amazon.com. It lists and describes lots of convents mostly in Rome but also elsewhere. Also, the website www.santasusanna.org lists convents all over the country.

I did a lot of research about convents and monasteries in Italy including the book mentioned above. Made a selection of 3 or 4 in Rome, one in Siena and 2 in Venice and started sending faxes. Most replied right away with prices and availability. Some didn't respond at all, and I had to phone and ask for somebody who spoke English to come to the phone. I am realy looking forward to my final selections which are:
Rome - Casa il Rosario
Siena - Hotel Alma Domus
Venice - Instituto Artigianelli.

E-mail me with any ??

Just back from 2 weeks in Rome-stayed 4 days at Casa il Rosario(E73) and really enjoyed it except for the basic bread and coffee breakfast and twin beds. Very clean with bath, patio with 2 palms, lemon and orange trees and 3 birds. Very quiet in inside room. No religeous hustling and very helpful sisters. A good location just behind Trajans mkt. and short walk to the forum. A good bargain. A great deal if they would serve fruit, cereal or eggs for breakfast! If you reserve and they give you an outside noisy room, let them know you are thinking of leaving and accommodations miraculously change for the better-must be the convent connection.

Bed and Blessings is a wonderful book but ...be warned!...some of the info is now out of date. Some convents are no longer accepting boarders. Also be prepared for some convents not speaking English. I had to phone in order to get info.

I have a wonderful place that I stayed in Rome for 11 days. It three blocks from the train station, and a five-ten minute walk from the colosseum and the Roman forum
http://www.suorebambinogesu.it/DNB/hotel.html

for a double room its only about 45euros with private bathroom and shower, breakfast is included. I believe that you can request dinner the morning of. When I think about it, it was more of a hotel run by the Nuns. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful.

hope this has been of some use!

We stayed at a great place near the Vatican called Casa Beata Margherita. Very clean and modest. Four twin beds in a row. New bathroom. About $60 for our family of four
