On the subject of driving, to lighten things up a bit, I suspect Americans on the road in the Cotswolds may need to look out for locals, as much as the other way around.

As illustration, I have it on eye witness authority from a friend who lives (and drives) in the vicinity of Tetbury, a certain duchess and sometime resident of her husband's house in the neighborhood has been known to drive herself there when under the influence and smack into things along the way. Specifically, look for a dent in a light post at the entrance to a big house in Doughton. I was sworn to secrecy but have named no names.

As on poster has already stated, it depends entirely on how the OP prefers to spend their evenings. I like a full meal and a couple of glasses of wine and, if the weather is dreary, I'll follow the meal with a small dram of whisky. I would never think of doing this and driving...anywhere or any distance. Most, if not all, rentals, offer kitchens and some visitors like to prepare their own meals. Not me, I'm on holiday, but I realize others are quite happy to do so.

I will also say that traffic in the Cotswolds has increased significantly in the 15 years since I lived there, and this can present a lot more problems than just driving a short distance in a seemingly idyllic countryside.

OP, of course, needs to deicide what is important to him; we can't and shouldn't determine what's best; however, we should point out the different options as well as their possible consequences both positive and negative

another matter to consider is whether you [either or both] like to imbibe more than a thimble-ful of alcoholic beverages with your dinner. If you do, you are definitely better off staying somewhere where either you can eat in [think country house hotel or vv good guest house where you won't get bored by the chef] or have plenty of choice eating out.

Personally my favourite place is Tetbury, but that is based more on the fact that I always try to stop off there on the way to and from visiting my mum, and my parents used to treat me to lunch there on the way back to uni every term, than recent knowledge of staying there. Advantages? plenty of eateries, it's very pretty to walk round, and it's not so big that it's a pain to drive out of every morning. Disadvantages? it's a bit far south of most of the Cotswolds. And if MmePerdu is correct, you may be in danger of colliding with someone famous!

We stayed in Chipping Campden for five nights last September as a base for exploring the Cotswolds. We stayed at Badgers Hall, a B&B right on the High Street. The restaurants and pubs were wonderful. All within walking distance of our B&B. We had a wonderful time there and would return in a heartbeat.

Taking into consideration all the wonderful suggestions.....having a nice meal with wine-rather at the top of our list. I thank you all so much for all the info. I am looking at maps and trying my best to narrow our choices by process of elimination. With this trip being our anniversary treat, I am trying my best to make it one to remember. We will be in Paris before this and in London after the Cotswolds so trying to find the perfect blend of English country charm and relaxation . I am researching and will report back. I love this forum for the varied opinions and suggestions. Greatest resource....something for everyone.

We spent the weekend of my birthday at the delightful Lamb Inn in Burford.

We loved Burford and as we also love wining and dining we prefer to stay in a place where there are several pubs and restaurants. We also like the atmosphere of a lively place. At least when we travel in England. Our pubs are second to none
