Cosmetics in Italy

Since I do carry-on only, it doesn't look like they're going to allow mascara/lipglosses etc on anytime soon.

Which brings me to this question: Is there anyplace like a Sephora at FCO where I'd be able to pick up a few basics upon arrival? I'm particular about my cosmetics and don't use drugstore products; I prefer MAC, Laura Mercier, etc. Do you think I'll have a hard time finding this in Rome? (because going out to buy make-up [and shampoo/soap] is literally the first thing I'm going to do after I check in)

thanks!

ACTUALLY--i just got the most scathingly brilliant idea.

I'll contact my hotel and if they ok this, I will just order some stuff off of Sephora's website and have it waiting for me in Italy upon arrival!

genius.

Also, judging from Sephora's website, there is a store at Termini!

MissZiegfeld - so, are you saying that Sephora is a shop at the Rome main train terminal that has high-end makeup including foundation, mascara, etc.? My ears have perked up! Do tell me more...(I'm in the same boat and am hesitant to post questions regarding makeup for fear of criticism - one of those "unless you've walked in my shoes" or, in this case, "unless you've waled around with my face&quot Thanks!

Hi dorkforcemom,
Sephora is make-up heaven, literally! They also have a wide variety of nice shampoo & conditioner products, lotions, soaps, perfumes, etc. They carry all the name brands (Dior, MAC, Too Faced, Urban Decay, Bare Escentuals, etc.) and their store brand "Sephora" is also quite good (and a bit less pricey). I didn't notice a Sephora in the Rome Termini when I was last there in May 2005 but I'll definitely be looking for it next summer!!

Yes, I delved into the Sephora website and there is, indeed, a store located in the Rome main terminal. There is hope for carry-on, after all!

(and I meant to type "walked", not "waled&quot

Are you going to discard them all upon leaving? You can't bring back cosmetics.

I'm trying to figure out that too.

You ladies just made my day! Great idea about having the items sent to the hotel. I usually by new items to travel with... all the better to have them waiting. Love Sephora.

Wow - that slightly significant detail didn't dawn on me! Thanks for bringing my head out of the clouds...I guess I'll have to stay in Italy.

"I guess I'll have to stay in Italy." - I love that

My only concern if the immigration will think it's a valid reason for us to apply for assylum!

What a hoot! Okay - here's a cosmetically specific inquiry...can anyone come up with a shop in the Rome main terminal that would sell Estee Lauder makeup?

MissZ, what I am even more curious about is how you manage to pack everything you need for a trip to Italy in the small carry-on's that the airlines allow you. I just finished packing for a 12 day trip and my suitcase weighs 45 pounds!! AND, I thought I was being conservative! If you are that particular about cosmetics, my bet is that you dress well when you travel so what is your secret?

Well... if you just do enough shopping that you need to ship purchases home you could always add the make-up to the box! (and cross your fingers and hope it didn't melt)

How many ladies here wear high end make-up verses drugstore make-up?

Actually I wear both. I use a good power and blush but I have been known to buy mascara or eyeshadow at Walmart.

JandoO, I also wear both. It's actually pretty smart to purchase the less expensive mascara, because you should be pitching it out every 30 days. My brother is an eye specialist, and he impressed upon me that "critters" can grow in eye make-up easily if the eye make-up has been opened and used for 30+ days. So I buy Great Lash and pitch it every 30 days.
There are some cool places in Rome for make-up, a couple on side streets between via del Corso and the Spanish Steps. There are also a couple of places right on via del Corso itself where I've purchased things like emery boards, and for anyone needing small bottles of shampoo, conditioner and the like, there's a Body Shop on via del Corso.

Why not take a small tote that can be checked on the way home for your new purchases? I take one every time and use it as a carryon and check my other bags that are full with stuff I buy over there. But if you still want to do just carryon, I think you could check the tote.

I used to wear both drug store and better make up, but since I only now wear make up for special occasions, and since I'm now of a certain age, I tend to use higher end cosmetics more.

But I love the mascara tip. Thanks, and Great Lash is good stuff!

Another mascara tip: the older we get, the less mascara/eyeliner should be applied to the lower eyelid, preferrably to the upper eyelid only for a younger look.

Try once: do upper and lower on one eye, and only upper on the other. Does the word "raccoon" come to mind?

Also, if you dye your hair, get the dye one tone lighter then your natural color for a more natural look.

Hi dorkforcemom,
The Sephora stores in the US sell Clinique and some Estee Lauder products so there is certainly a chance that the store in the Rome Termini might sell Estee Lauder.
