Copenhagen--Staying Just Outside Central

We are headed to Sweden, Denmark and Norway next summer with our 2 teenagers. As we research accommodations we are, not surprisingly, getting sticker shock, especially in Copenhagen.

If we choose to stay in Osterbro or Fredericksburg will we regret it? In a perfect world, we'd stay in the central district close to everything. We do like to walk everywhere but I don't think we'd mind riding on the metro or buses. I imagine it is like staying on the UES of Manhattan and wanting to check things out downtown. One wouldn't think twice about a 15-10 min subway ride. But if you mention staying in Jersey City instead of Manhattan, people strongly advise to stay in Manhattan.

We will be there 4 or 5 nights which is why cheaper, like closer to $200-250, is our desire than $350+ (remember we have 4 people and it isn't like Europe has Hampton Inns with 2 queen beds per room so often looking at 2 hotel rooms).

Thanks for your opinions!

Check my trip report. We stayed in a two bedroom apartment just on the other side of the lakes. The reference to it is in the last comment that I entered as an addendum to the report; click on my name to find it.

Thanks Michael, I will check out the rental company. You mentioned the second apartment wasn't as good as first. Was it the location (assuming you were over the lake from central area) or the apartment itself that wasn't as nice?

The second apartment, which is the appropriate one for your group, was colder than the first: spare furniture with little personality except for the travel pictures of the owners. The bedrooms were fine, it was a full kitchen on the whole, although some cooking utensils were not there--such as no decent kitchen knifes and, if I remember correctly, no basic spices and cooking oil. The shower flooded easily because of an improper drainage system--it looked classy but did not function well; don't turn the shower on full blast. The location was no problem at all; Google the street to find its location.

Copenhagen is not that big and there is a very good public transportation system. I have lived there regularly, during the summers, since the 1970s and was just there again in June/July. I have also been there in other seasons.

As for my personal favorite place to stay, it's hands down in Frederiksberg and near or on either Falconer Alle or Gammel Kongevej (streets). I have Danish friends who have lived in that area for many decades and many times we meet up and walk from Frederiksberg into central Copenhagen as we only need to walk out Gammel Kongevej to get into the heart of the city. It's not that long of a walk.

When I stay in Frederiksberg, I'm usually staying on the same street as the Frederiksberg metro station, (on Falconer Alle). The Frederiksberg metro station is located in a very good area and is also attached to the Frederiksberg shopping center where I go to both the bakery and the supermarket. Plus, there are restaurants all along that street and even a movie theater nearby.

I have stayed in different areas of Frederiksberg, but usually either on Falconer Alle or right at Gammel Kongevej. One friend lives at the Forum metro station (Frederiksberg), which is one station past the Frederiksberg metro station and one station closer to central Copenhagen. She either takes the metro, one stop to me, or walks over to my area of Frederiksberg.

It's very convenient for me to take that metro line, from Frederiksberg, into central Copenhagen as it goes directly to Kongens Nytorv (Nyhavn area) and the metro stops right under the Magazin Department store where both the grocery store and food marts are and it's also right at the top of the Walking Street (Stroget). Plus, that same line goes to Norreport Station which stops right at Torvehallen, in one direction, and is a short walk, in the other direction, to lead into the streets that will end up right on the Walking Street (Stroget). Access an online map and trace the Norreport and Kongens Nytorv routes.

Now, as for Osterbro, it has never been one of my desired areas although one of the friends, who has lived in Frederiksberg for decades, used to live in Osterbro and I used to bike there to visit her.

Happy Travels!

Michael, that agency only has 5 apts available our dates and none really fit our needs People sure book up accommodation early. This is for the last week in July, 2018!

Guenmai, thanks for the info on Fredericksberg! It makes me a lot more comfortable looking at apts and hotels out that way.

Below is the metro (subway) map and you can see Frederiksberg, Norreport, and Kongens Nytorv on it. There are only two, metro (subway) lines so one can't get lost.

Below is a guide of the some of the different areas of Copenhagen of which Frederiksberg is listed.

We rented two apartments through this agency: https://www.apartmentincopenhagen.com/ one of which was in the center, and the other one, a two bedroom apartment, in Norrebro just by the lakes that separate that neighborhood from the center. I can't thank you enough, Guenmai, for posting the info on Fredericksberg (and beyond!). It's given me so much comfort -- I'd booked a place in F'berg, but I had some doubts. Not any more! Thanks.
