I was pretty bowled over by Melk Abbey near Vienna this summer--Never saw such gold and wealth.

I've seen quite a few splendid houses of worship in Europe (as you know, Bob). But I have a soft spot for the older, smaller, more human-scaled churches like this one in Segovia:

A unique church I have visited is the Church of St. Anne on Patmos. It is built around the cave where St. John wrote the book of Revelations. I attended a Greek Orthodox service there during Easter in 2003. Another unique church I have visited is the church built into the catacombs of Domitilla near the Appian Way near Rome. I cannot recall if the church actually had a name or not. I have also visited St Peters and St Maggiore in Rome, St Pauls and Westminster in London, Cathedrals of Winchester, Salisbury, Canterbury, Wells, and Oxford. Bath Abbey and the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. Iona Abbey in Scotland. Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur in Paris, Santa Croce and the Duomo of Florence, St Marks in Venice, St Anthonys in Padua, St Vitale in Ravenna, and the Cathedral of St Maria in Pisa (climbed the leaning tower, too).

I had several fabulous shots of that church in Segovia---some with a wedding couple as props---and lost them all. Great shots !

Well, we did seem to get off the path this time. Believe it or not, the original phase of planning had us going to Italy for the first time - Tuscany/Dolomites/Venice. But then... things happen

I'm glad we went now though. Romania won itself a new promoter and I'm not so sure it'll be the same place in 10 years. A truly beautiful country, but with some challenges.

We just returned from Germany and found (by accident!) an amazing church in Ulm. We decided at the last minute to try to find the Christmas market there and it turned out that the church was nearby. The literature there said it is the church with the tallest steeple in the world - nearly 550 feet. We've seen the four major basilcas in Rome and they are all fantastic. However, this was such an unexpected and surprising gem to find.

The abbey church at St. Gallen in Switzerland which is often described as having the "most beautiful" interior of any religious building in that small country.

I love Rome, as you all know, and it is home to about 900 Catholic churches. I find most of them pretty cool. I do have a particular fondness, though, for a church known as San Carlo del Corso, because it's right on via del Corso. When I'm in Rome, I usually stay at the Hotel San Carlo, and the church is very close to the hotel. The last night I was in Rome on my most recent trip, a Roman friend took me out to dinner, and gave me a present of two engravings by Turner. In one of the engravings, San Carlo del Corso is depicted.

And Bob, I think if Mr. Go has any photos of that church, he'll probably be more than happy to share with you!

Great pictures, Bob. To the list add the tiny little church on its own island in Lake Bled.

The small but exquisite Madonna del Carmine in Bagnara Calabra. The caretaker saw us admiring the exterior and opened the doors. I was awestruck by the gold interior and nearly tripped over a coffin.

bookchick, I'm a church-y myself.
I loved San Carlo alle Quattro Fonatane (Carlino) in Rome, but never saw your San Carlo. It's now on my list.
I also love Santa Maria Vittoria because of the Bernini sculpture inside.

Bobthe, wonderful view of the Tyn church in Prague. My favorite in Prague though, at least for the interior, is St Nicholas, followed by St Vitus at the Castle, followed by the Loretta.

In Venice, I have lots of favorites. In addition to the Basilica, there are the Miracoli, Zanipolo, the Frari, San Giorgio, and San Giorgio dei Greci.

In Paris I think my favorite among those I've seen is St Etienne-du-Mont,
not counting Ste Chapelle as a working church.

Vienna: Loved the Stefansdom, and the Jesuit church (the latter was a little hard to find, but worth it)

Corfu: Church of Saint Spyridon
