Concert Dress Code

We are being given free tickets to a concert on 15th Feb - I think its at Municipal House. Never been to anything like this before and not sure of dress code, we were wanting pack light and only take warm clothing - but will we need dressy stuff for this concert?

I think its a mix of opera singers and Philharmonic Orch. Any ideas?

What city is this in?

But regardless, something like "business casual" or even less formal will be fine almost everywhere.

Do you know where the seats are located (and how much are the tickets)? It's quite a difference between orchestra stalls vs nose-bleed sections.

A lot of Europeans will dress up (suit) for nice seats, whereas up in the cheap section where usually younger people are, you'll find plenty of jeans.

we've been to opera and concerts in both prague and budapest; "business casual" / "smart casual" were fine, except I will say when we were in Prague it was some special night for a retired opera singer (who knew) and 3/4 of the place was in gowns and fancy cocktail dresses; but we looked fine enough and the remaining 1/4 attending were dressed like we were...in my traditional "going out when traveling outfit" .....black pants, nice top, shawl....
OH have fun - I am jealous !

..... there really isn't a 'prague' forum, it's the europe forum, so it is best to put "Prague" in the title or whatever city inquiring about - or whatever specifics you are asking about: restaurants, hotels, and where - have a ball in prague! great city!

Cheers for the tips escargot - I'll do that in future. The Municipal building wher the concert is is close to our Hotel Paris - this is close to Old Town Sqaure I believe. Does that help at all.

Are the concerts at MH less special than the Opera House for instance - I think th etickets are worth about £20 that we are getting free from the Hotel, so I wouldn't imagine they are posh seats? What do you think?

I don't know if the operas are 'less special' - maybe just different setting.. I would be leery to gauge it on the price, as we found opera in both prague and budapest to be incredibly affordable - even in orchestra - and downright a bargain in standing room areas - and they are always full -
I still think you can't go wrong with many peoples basic 'going out at night while traveling' outfit : black pants or black skirt (whichver you are bringing); and a dressier than day top or a nic etop you always jazz up with a scarf or shawl. My husband does always throw a tie in suitcase, so he usually wears his pair or 'going out pants' and a shirt/tie/ and sometimes sweater.

While you are in Prague, also take a peek at what is playing at Magic Lantern (although i think it's spelled MagiK for some reason...memory...) they had some very unusual performances when we've been there - if you like this type of stuff - we've seen amazing dance/movement pieces, that type of thing. For some reason, I can get my husband to go on things on vacation that hemight not be inclined to at home! It's fun to experiment, esp in other countries.

Municipal House probably draws more tourists than locals. So, dress "casual nice" at least. That will be fine. When I go to the Czech Phil concerts (Rudolfinum), or operas at the National Theater or State Opera during the main season, I dress up a lot. The locals are usually VERY dressed up at these events, especially for big concerts. Off season, or smaller venues will be more casual, but older Europeans will almost always be way more dressed up than your average tourist. As long as you are neat & presentable, and show that you are respectful of the performance, you will fit in. Enjoy!

Unless things have changed immensely, I would think that 20 pounds would buy pretty darn good seats in Prague. Maybe someone can tell me if this is wrong.

amp322 said it perfectly: ' older Europeans will almost always be way more dressed up than your average tourist. As long as you are neat & presentable, and show that you are respectful of the performance, you will fit in. '

They realize travelers are there, who may not want to have to include dressy dressy in their suitcase, they, like anyone, are happy you are enjoying their country and their performances.

Some great replies there - thanks. I will go smart but casual as suggested. Yes, one of the main reasons for not wanting to dress up was the extra luggage. But i feel better now tht I won't look out of place.

Amazing you say £20 may get a better seat - we thought they would be the worst as they come free with an already greta value package - i can't wait.

I hope I'm not wrong about the 20 pound tickets. Let us know after you return.
