Is there an update to this or did your family member decide to not pursue this?

Sorry, but what happened to me, or to you, or to anyone else is IMO irrelevant when it comes to airline flights, compensation, what any of us or those so-called experts on FT think, etc., etc.

I agree with you, Sparkchaser: what we want to know is what happened to the people who are actually INVOLVED in this thing.

Eventual outcome: United did offer them vouchers for a fairly significant amount of money. A contact found through Flyertalk helped expedite this. But, of course, they are vouchers not cash, and vouchers have expiration dates and limit one to take flights on that particular airline.

Incidentally, something I found pretty incredible was United's argument that they were not actually denied boarding because denial of boarding can only happen at the gate. They were never even allowed past the ticketing counters and had no way of getting to the gates, so I find this argument to be a huge stretch on United's part.

As they learned from this experience (and will never forget), never just wait in line for the agent to rebook you. Get on your phone instead.

Congrats to your son, julies. Hope his next flight is uneventful. I love that you solicited the help of a FT poster. My friend had great luck with a FT expert after experiencing a similar issue.
