Where can I find authenic old communist memorabilia in Prague and Budapest? Which places should I stay away from that carry fraudulent items? Thank you.

I can't tell you for sure whether it was real or not, but they had some of these items at a shop up on the top of Gellert Hill in Budapest when I was there four years ago. I collect some medals and other military items, and I thought the World War II and communist-era items there at least looked authentic - military coats and hats, Nazi toy soldiers, etc. They were priced as authentic items would be too. I would look for shops that specialize in these types of items - perhaps in Pest. I certainly wouldn't trust anything off the street. I don't remember anywhere in Prague. One problem you may run into is that there are some amazing militaria fakes out there that can be even better looking than the originals, and it can take a real expert to tell the difference.

You may be interested in www.militaria-online.com. It lists lots of dealers and places flags by them to indicate their locations. Unfortunately, I did not see any from Czech Repub., Hungary, or Austria when I glanced through it. There were some for many countries, including Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Canada. Of course, most are in the U.S. Some appear to specialize in Soviet items.
