Fodors <BR> <BR>Yes: I was there twice in 1981, and shall go again this summer. Delightful. British travel agents offer weekend breaks there during the winter. For a taste you might read two travel notes <BR>http://www.guardianunlimited.co.uk/A...030224,00.html <BR>http://www.travel-library.com/europe...rby/index.htm/. <BR> <BR>For general guides, you could try http://www.inyourpocket.com/ and http://www.tourism.ee/. <BR> <BR>Ben Haines <BR>

My husband and I visited Tallinn, Estonia from our cruise ship about 6 years ago. We found it fascinating -- the old city walls are still well preserved. It's a great day stop, but I don't think it's a tourist destination in itself for any length of time. Prices for handmade woolens were exceptionally low, and some were of quite good quality. Many of the crew from our cruise ship used Tallinn as the port where they could stock up on souveniers and necessities because of the low prices.

We spent a day in Tallin last summer. It was like walking off the ferry in Disneyland into "1950's Land". The people were charming, the town was adorable, and the shopping was unreal. Actually, I found little to buy other than a hand-painted cup of Estonian dancers and their state flower. Although the open air market in the middle of the town was fun to browse. B/c of all the press about the Russian McD's, 4 of us decided to snack there...4 cheeseburgers and 4 cokes cost under $5US...my kids still talk about that! We wished we had had time to go to the one 5star hotel for the $13US hr massage offered! Be sure to climb the hill and look over the town....an awesome Kodak spot with lots of local artists offering their wares.

I liked Tallinn a lot, and also Tartu. After the madness of St Petersburg I found Tallinn to be very tourist friendly and very inexpensive. As commented above, sweaters were wonderful values--about $20-40 each, probably 1/4 of a comparable at Macys. For a good glimpse, go to <BR> <BR>www.inyourpocket.com <BR>
