Colors for slacks/dress pants?

I read many recommendations to wear black or navy slacks in France, Spain, and the lot, but what about khakki/tan pants? Are these something that will help one to "blend in" with the locals in Europe?

Just curious...

Scott -

Depends somewhat on the time of year you're travelling (you'll see more lighter colors in spring/summer), but khakis seem to be more of an American/British/Australian thing - I haven't seen many locals in France or Italy wearing them. Linen trousers in some shade of tan might be more common, especially in the warmer months/regions.

However, an advantage of black/navy/charcoal is that these darker colors both hide the dirt better and can be dressed up more easily than lighter shades. That said, khakis are perfectly acceptable attire.

But with black stay away from white dogs, white cats, pale dusty roads, talcum powdered bathroom sinks and chalky rocks.

How about cargo pants? Do European frown upon too many pockets? And how about cargo shorts?

Definitely the Europeans -- at least when we were in England and France -- are in dark clothing. We took black and gray, and blended right in. Didn't see any khaki on the locals . . .
