We took the ferry from Doolin to the Aran Islands and had a great view of the cliffs, (it was good enough for us)but it wasn't a close up look like you'd get on the cliffs ferry tour. The pier is about 2-4 miles north from where the cliffs start.

The view from the bottom of the cliffs is incredible. I had been to the top of the cliffs many times but a couple of years ago, I happened on the trip from Liscannor by accident, and I heartily enjoyed the view and spiel of the captain.

I have always utilized the Cruise company out of Doolin, http://www.cliffs-of-moher-cruises.com, and have never been dissatisfied. You defintely miss the up close and personal effect by only seeing it as you cross to the Arans. There is a magic in setting so close to the Cliffs, looking up at the birds, hundreds of them, nesting on the ledges and pondering how many leagues further below do the Cliffs project.

The Jack B, www.mohercruises.com,has a cliffs tour and also goes to Inisheer, but not Inishmore. Doolin Ferry, www.doolinferry.com goes to Inishmore and stops off at Inisheer as well.
