Clapham Common, London

Ok, I'm looking at this B&B http://www.athomeinlondon.co.uk/our-...etails?ref=308 which is located in the Clapham Common of London. I understand that it's not in the central part of London, but that's ok with us. The price fits my budget. I'm am unfamiliar with London and it's neighborhoods, so I am asking for any input about this area of London, good, bad, just ok. I've looked at google earth and it seems ok to me, but what do I know.

Clapham Common famous for "cottaging" as various MPs have been caught out there.

naughty bilbo - what on earth is the OP going to make of that?

dgassa - clapham Common is a very populous but OK residential area of London but as a tourist destination it has the disadvantage that there are no underground stations nearby. There are over-ground train stations, which will get you into central london to connect with the tube, but not the tube itself.

this may lead to extra time being spent - or even costs - which may mean that you'd rather be somewhere else which does have access to the tube.

Not true...clapham common has 3 underground stations, clapham north, clapham common and clapham south, all on the northern line.

It's a yuppie type neighbourhood in zone two. We lived there for two years and loved it. It's a bit farther out and will take you about 30 mins to get to tourist sites but safe and fine. It's residential and you will need to take transit everywhere but there are lots of restaurants etc around.

But get the exact postal code to ensure its actually at th common as opposed to clapham junction, which is at an overland station, although probably just as convenient into Victoria or Waterloo stations...

I wouldn't hate living there (wouldn't be my choice but is certainly OK), but I would hate staying there on holiday.

There is a tube station, it is on the Northern line - but it it is not at all convenient for day to day sightseeing. for example 30+ mins to Russell Sq (British museum) w/ 2 line changes. About half an hour to the Tower of London w/ a transfer w/ a walk between stations.

Looking at the website I don't understand. They say it is 7 min walk from the Piccadilly line - this is impossible in that clapham common is no where near the Piccadilly line. Clapham common station is the northern line only. It is also no where near sloane square...that is north of the over, clapham is south of the river..wht they describe makes NO sense...

Didn't see jamikins post. To clarify - I specifically meant the Clapham Common tube station.

You can see the tube map at www.tfl.gov.uk to see where these places are on the tube

I seriously think the person who created the B&Bs website has never been to London

Any nitwit knows the Northern Line and the Piccadilly line ain't the same thing. In fact the two lines only intersect at Leicester Sq and Kings Cross which are miles from Clapham Common . . .

From the responses I guess the neighborhood would be ok. I think the description on the B&B site says it's 3 min walk to bus which will get me to places mentioned. I do know it's on the Northern Tube line and have looked at the distance from the B&B to the station and also know that it's 30 minutes to the center. That's OK with us. You gotta give up something if you're only paying $140 (USD).

$140! That is nearly £90 - I figured you'd be saving a lot staying down there. Not so.

£50-£60 - I'd maybe consider staying there. But for £90 -not a chance in hell . . . .

You should be able to find something around £85-£95 in very central neighborhoods. Victoria, Earls Court, Bloomsbury. Even Paddington (which I generally dislike) would be better. Lots of budget accommodations in all of those areas. And failing that - Priceline can get you a 4 star hotel for around the same $$/££

I don't know your dates but if you check londontown.com you will find many places for less than £90. Mostly 2 and 3 star but some higher rated..

Agree that seems like a lot for a place whose location you can;t really pin down. I would ask for a specific address and then determine exactly where it is. If you have to take a bus to a tube and then to the center - it could take you an hour to get anyplace you want to see.

Thanks for the replies, I'll consider all suggestions. We do like B&B's and not a B&B hotel, so if anyone has any suggestions in that reguard it might be helpful in making a selection. 30 to 40 minutes travel time for us is not a problem. Yes closer to the center would be nice, but then we're moving away from our budget. This trip will be a 2 month trip starting in London for 5 to 6 days. Again, thanks for any suggestions.

I seriously think the person who created the B&Bs website has never been to London >>

honest injun gov' i have been there, but not for such a long time that I'd completely forgotten that the northern line goes that far south. apologies dgassa! BTW, when i looked at it just now it does say 3 mins to the Northern line, so i don't know where the Picaddilly Line came in.

after that terrible faux pas you would be within your rights to ignore everything I say, but are you sure that staying out that far is a real saving? will you go back into town at night [doubling your transport costs?] or are you happy to eat locally in the evenings? could you manage to find the extra that it would cost to stay a bit closer to the centre elsewhere in your two months?

Funny annhig - they have obviously updated the website since yesterday as it clearly read Picadilly line yesterday!

I can confirm what jamikins said. Yesterday 'twas "Piccadilly Line" and no mention of the Northern Line. Maybe the OP contacted them to clarify things or they saw the thread themselves and got the mistake fixed.
