Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast?
I have only enough time for one or the other. I've heard stories of how beautiful both are and I can't decide!!! Could someone please help me here.

Another question...what do you need to rent a moped in Italy. I've read about people taking the Amalfi drive with a moped. Also, can anyone tell me anything about the Pontine Islands? Thanks a lot.

Matt,

This is a tough question. I have been to both several times and each has its charms. Maybe if I knew some of your priorities for the trip and where else you'll be, I could better advise you. Feel free to e-mail me directly. What kind of accomodations are you looking for? And, what time of year are you going?

I had the same decision to make. The rental car rates ended up making the decision for me. Renting a car Or dropping a car off in Italy is so much more expensive. I decided for Positano and then because it is so much cheaper to drop it in France, decided to drive there rather than drop it in Italy and then take the train to France and re rent. My whole trip was redone and I highly recommend the first thing to check is car rental rates. Germany is unbelievably less and all the insurance is covered because you rented in Germany.
There is a lot to car rentals to learn.
Will be in Positano with my college daughter. It is just too enticing to miss. Will catch a bit of the Cinque Terre on the way to France. Hope you make the right decision for you. Diane
You might type in Positano on the forum search and read all the replies. That convinced me....

Matt, Your trip logistics should dictate your choice. Both are great but
the Amalfi coast is far south and calls
for a geographic commitment. As Diane
says, her car rental options changed her
itinerary---wonder how she found that out? You should always start with the overall trip logistics and let that
decide where you CAN go. Seems Diane
has partially learned that lesson. She
can thank me later.

How about factoring in your desire for hiking? If you love to hike, consider Cinque Terre, because no road links the towns together, and there is a hiking trail that does.

If you prefer cliffside driving, go to Amalfi. I have never been, but have heard about the breathtaking drives (because of the vistas and because of the narrow, high-perched roads!).

You can't go wrong either way!
