Christmas time--Switzerland?

I'm thinking about a solo Christmas trip from Dec. 18 to 24. I live in Florida and would like cold weather, Christmas lights, markets and old world charm. Since I'm likely to be alone, I want lots of diversions. I like Zurich and wouldn't mind seeing the Swarovski tree and the Christmas markets there. Then on to Lucerne which I've also been to and like. What will Lucerne, Lausanne, and Montreux be like at that time? Much to see? I like to wander around and shop and explore on my own and have done so many times before. But I do worry about getting the blues, especially at such a family-oriented time of year. If you think there are better places, please say. Not interested in Germany or Austria. What about Belgium or the Netherlands? I don't ski. Thanks for any advice.

I'd certainly include Vevey if you are going to spend time along the shore of Lac Leman; depends on what your definition of "lots of diversions" actually is. Certainly plenty of sightseeing available even if you don't ski

Too bad you're not interested in Germany or Austria. Switzerland is by far not as festive and christmassy as these countries. Christmas is much more a private affair there, the Christmas Markets cannot compete.

You say you don't ski but you might like Zermatt nonetheless. It is a beautiful village at the base of the Matterhorn, accessible only by train from the valley. There are no cars in the village (only electric vehicles). They have ice skating, sleigh rides, etc. The hotels there are lovely, with very good food. It will be pricey at Christmas though.

I enjoyed both Bern and Basel at Christmastime. Both were beautifully decorated, had interesting Christmas markets and friendly people in the restaurants.

Wherever you choose to go, I suggest you make plans for Christmas Eve dinner ahead of time. Many places are closed and those that are open often only take reservations.

I've visited Switzerland in mid-December a few times. It's certainly more sedate and low key than Germany or Austria that time of year, but that's a good thing IMO. You'll find small holiday markets set up in rail stations, roasting chestnuts sold on city streets, lots of tiny white lights and Santas dangling from windows and ladders. I like Zermatt before the Christmas crush begins - it's often snow covered, and peaceful and horse drawn carriages with jingling bells go up and down the main street. It feels festive without all the usual trappings.

We enjoyed Engelberg around Christmas too, and it's close to Lucerne, which has the occasional holiday market.

One year we went from the serene holiday cheer of Zermatt and Murren directly to Singapore. It was shocking. Orchard Road has the most ostentatious display of Christmas insanity I've seen anywhere.
