Thanks Ann- So now I'll book my flights- I will use the internet to search out hotels for each city . Correct?
I will get train tickets once I hit the ground?
Am I correct to assume that on the 25th and 26th Churches are open for viewing with respect and low key even when services are on?

hi Bruce,

I think that received wisdom is to book transatlantic flgihts asap, but as we're brits, I've no experience of that side of the planning process. there are a number of threads about the timing of booking these flights, many to do with frequent flyer miles. I don't know if that applies to you. you could start a separate thread with a title like - "I want to book flights from US to Italy at Christmas, when should i book", post what you have yourself disclovered and see what answers you get.

as for hotels, the usual internet sites like venere and hotels.com are a good place to start. or you coudl go to TRip advisor, and see which hotels come top in each destination. you can put in your holiday dates, and only look at the ones that come up, or you can look at them all. a good tip is then to look at the hotel's own website to see if they havve any better offers. once you have narrowed it down a bit, you coudl come back here with your choices and see what other fodorites think.

don't forget, you can book hotels through sites like venere and cancel without penalty so long as you don't pick rates that can't be cancelled [usually well indicated] and do it far enough in advance, normally 48 hours, but it may be as long as week. read the coditions of booknig carefuly id you are donig this.

this enables you to hold your choice or choices while you do some more research.

you can also look at www.slowtravel.com, which is particularly good for italy and apartments. I still think that anapartment in Rome might be the best way for you to go, and you can book them for as little as 3 nights.

you can reserve some train tickets in advance, but most people just get them when they arrive in italy, either at a train station or at a travel agent which advertises this facility.

google the rome tourist office for what is open when over christmas. I've only been there and to Venice at easter, when everything was open except on Monday, which is traditionally a bad day in europe generally. the colloseum seems to have the longest opening hours.

have a great trip,

regards, ann
