Christmas Dinner in Paris

I am headed to Paris this Christmas with my wife, 8 month old, and mom. It is their first trip to Paris, and my previous ones offer no clues. We speak no French (Spanish, German, Italian, and Lao between us though!)

Any ideas on quality restaurants (we are staying in the 7th but will be metroing) for Christmas dinner? Agnostic on food type, although French probably good for mom. We take the baby out all the time but want to avoid somewhere overly formal. Assuming we probably need to make reservations before we arrive the 23rd.

Appreciate any help.

D’Chex Eux 2 ave de Lowendale > 47 05 52 55
In the 7th.
Wonderful restaurant, really good service..wait staff treats everyone like they are special .. plenty of tasty food and an amazing dessert cart that I was forced, I swear, forced to try more than one, ok, more than 2 desserts.
Not overly formal, but nice. Some patrons are film people and political types..but no attitudes at all.

Scarlett: I ate at D’Chex Eux with a Parisian friend a month ago. Your description of the restaurant is excellent.

Oops! It should be spelled D'Chez Eux.

Thank you. Looks great (new spelling worked with google!) and it is an easy walk from our apartment.

That is an excellent question...one which I wish I would have asked prior to my Christams in Paris 5 years ago. We stocked up on food at a local market and ate in our room..we did not find much open on Christmas Day. Christmas Eve was better, alot was open. Unfortunately, we were starving and ate a chinese restaurant out of desperation. Nothing is open in Paris on Christmas Day...I'm sure a few restaurants are..but everything else closes. I found it nice at first, then I was bored and could not wait for the next day. Enjoy!!

Hotel restaurants--and most are quite good--will be open on Christmas Day, but reserve very soon.

Two restaurants that are open all year round:
Au Pied de Cochon
http://www.blanc.net/cochon/index.html
http://www.bestrestaurantsparis.com/...hp?id_resto=67
(you may reserve on-line at either website)

Le Grand Café
http://www.legrandcafe.com/
http://www.bestrestaurantsparis.com/...hp?id_resto=63
(you may reserve on-line at either website)

The latter is a favorite of fellow Fodor's Parisophile, Christina.

The Pied de Cochon is very "brasserie" and I find the service quite bad. Its certainly not formal though. Where are you staying?

The area you are staying in is quite buisnessy - there may not be so much open. There is a good cheap bistro near there called the Bistro de Breteuil. A nice one is the Cantine des Gourmets which is also nearby. La Fermette Marbeuf may be open. You may get some very pricey restraunts like Arpege open. You will have to ring to check Xmas opening.

We spent last Xmas dinner at Le Relais d'Entrecote off the Blvd. St. Michel in the 6th. I know we didn't have reservations. It has white tablecloths and is a typical steak and frites place. The desserts were yummy. If I recall correctly, it was about 25-30 Euro with drinks & dessert. I believe there is also one in the 16th.

Ask your hotel for recommendations of nearby restaurants--the concierge will know which will be open on Christmas.

He can't ask the concierge - he's staying in an apartment. Sounds like some really good recs he's been given though.

Another good idea might be to ask the manager/owners of the apartment.
When we rented this last trip, the ParisPerfect people were happy to recommend anything we needed help with, they left lists in the apt also.
It would have been a great help if we had not known our way around.

I checked the website for this restaurant (D'Chez Eux.) and they are closed from December 24 to January 2.We are travelling to Paris too next week and will be there on Christmas day. Any other ideas on what may be open on Christmas day?

I havn't read all of the other posts but christmas eve is the big night. We don't generally spend too much on food but there were plenty of restaurants open on christmas eve in the 5th where we stayed. Reservations were not req'd. I'm guessing that christmas day will be better as far as coices goes but I could be wrong. I'm sure the gormands on the board will and have given you better info on where to eat. Paris at christmas is great and you will have a blast. Be sure to go to mass at Notre Dame at least for the experience. You will love it just for the magnificence of the ceremony (7:00pm). Also be sure to visit the christmas market at Le Halle before it closes on christmas eve. Have a great time!!
