Leeds is well worth a vist, with an interesting eccentric garden too. Also in Kent and not far away is Scotney castle, a romantic ruined castle set in a stunning landscaped garden, Bodiam -a true historic castle and definitely not disneyfied. Sissinghurst Garden (absolutely the best garden in England)is based around a ruined tudor castle. There is also Hever Castle, home of Anne Boleyn. Infact kent has more castles (and stunning gardens) than any other county. We stayed at Church Gates bed and breakfast in Cranbrook near Sissinghurst. Its a beautiful historic house dating back to tudor times with a great view of the church. There is a lot ofhistory in this part of the world and the nice thing is that its not too touristy. Most of the sights are out in the countryside, so it would be best to hire a car.

Although it's been more than 15 years since I've been to Warwick the only thing I saw that may be "Disney" was the apartment scenario...but I must tell you if I ever wanted to see a castle with a moat, peacocks walking around, a mound that goes back so far, Esmeralda's...that I can't imagine. and my Fodor's.com friends...my husband thinks he has on film a ghost ... two pictures that are strange.. Warwick Castle is my choice.. Off to London again....in a few day..this time will be revisiting St. Paul's.. the nook and crannies

Kelly - I would recommend the castle in Dover. Leeds had a corporate feel to it. Our tour of Leeds was interupted by various business meetings breaking for intermission. There is a mini museum for strange dog collars - if that is your thing. The gardens are nice.

May I suggest Canterbury as an alternative. The cathedral was well worth a visit - even if the poorly rebuilt city surrounding it was a bit of a drag.
