Horseman on the Roof," based on the book by Jean Giono, subtitles in English.
Made in 1996 in France. Like the book, this film is picaresque and full of coincidences, but it's also action packed and the performances of its two leading actors are compelling. The scenery is gorgeous and beautifully photographed, most of it in the northern, more isolated regions of Provence, although the roofs that the main character hides among are the roofs of the south Luberon village of Cucuron.

Thanks for bringing this thread back up. It was because I was looking at Ger's pix of the Dordogne that the village in Chocolat came to mind. Now I'll have a chance to see both sites. I go to Dordorgne in April and to Burgundy in August. I've already rerouted out drive from Vezelay to Dijon to go through Flavigny. Should be fun to look for the places.

When we first saw the movie, we read the credits and I wrote down the name Flavigny. It sounded so familar to me. I came home and got out the map - and sure enough we had been very close to Flavigny on one of our trips. In fact, I had the name down in my notes, but we had gone in the opposite direction to Vezelay and had missed Falvigny. I knew that we would go if we got close again, and we did last fall! It is such a cute place. We arrived about noon on a Sunday and looked for a place to eat. "La Grange", a cafeteria style place, was serving Sunday dinner and everyone in town, it seemed, was eating there. It was such fun - the tables were picnic style - and everyone set together. We had such a good time! Afterwards, we found a little shop - don't remember the name - selling mainly a large assortment of post cards - the gentleman showed us pictures of all the buildings where the movie was shot - and we were able to walk around and see the main spots - where the chocolat shop was housed, etc.
I have been wanting to see the movie again ever since, and it was on TV just three days ago. I taped it and plan to watch it soon. I will be looking to spot all the places we saw while there. I certainly understand why they chose this town for the movie - it is so picturesque - a really beautiful little Burgundy village. I couldn't resist buying a little tin of the anis candies - and I think of Flavigny every time I look at it.
