Children's clothing shops in Paris

When in Paris, we always choose an outfit for our granddaughters, ages 4 and 8. We have always found that the children's shops on Rue Vavin. near Lux.Gardens, to be good. Also a pricier shop, but with very different things, on the corner of Monparnasse and Raspail is another favorite.

Does anyone know of some shops in another area that we may visit this September? We had looked at a few in the 8th but they were outrageously expensive. We usually spend about $150-$200 on each. This sounds like alot, but in Paris it's peanuts!

Gerard Darel has shops in the Marais and Blvd St Germain. They recently started carrying a little girls' line which I think is not available in the US yet. I have a friend who shops there for her daughter.....really cute things!

I can see you are looking for something a bit more upscale than what I purchased for my SO's grand-daughter my last trip to Paris, and you probably have looked there, but, a large Monoprix (INNO) was on Blvd. Edgar Quinet, and I went nuts in there buying clothes for her. It was close to Christmas, and we usually get her clothes, and they had just the cutest styles at very reasonable prices, well made, and she wore them until she out grew them.

I saw a couple of very nice childrens boutiques up near Monmatre, we passed them walking down the hill to catch the metro. The clothes were wonderful, but too expensive for me to buy for a kid. I spent about 300.00 at Monoprix and I got a ton of things from pants and tops, a jacket, sweaters, a hat and scarf, a couple of dresses.

I also noticed a kids boutique across the street from Bon Marche..Rue Sevres I think.

We usually head for Du Pareil Au Meme which has branches all over Paris. Prices are reasonable, and the quality is pretty good. Not high end, but some fun stuff.

When I had one grandchild I bought her outfits at Tartine et Chocolat, BonPoint, Jacadi, and Catamini; they have beautiful clothes and prices to match! Often they are muted colors and sophisticated styling.

And now that i have more grandchildren, I have looked around a bit. Last couple of trips I discovered Du Pareil Au Meme (locations all over Paris). There's one on Blvd. St. Germain (close to the church) and another near Le Bon Marche. They are reasonably priced and have cute, trendy styles that appeal to kids that age. We were in Paris for only 3 hrs. when my 6 yr old granddaughter found a hot pink trench coat that she just loved at DPAM, and of course, we bought it!

Anothr place to look is Galeries Lafayette, where the children's dept. is divided into boutiques where you can find some of the above mentioned lines, also.

And have you visited the Pom d'Api shoe stores for kids? Gorgeous little shoes!

What is more fun than shopping for little kids on whom everything looks just great!

Thanks for the responses----more questions:

Judy---any idea what streets in the Marais or where on St.Germain for Gerard Darel. I tried to look it up but only found them in the 8th.

Grandmere---where is Pom d'Api? Although I'm leery of shoes because of the fit.

crefloors---I do & will look in the department stores, but haven't found anything I couldn't buy at home. If we go to Montmarte, I'll check those out. I'll also look for the botique across from Bon Marche.

melissa19 & grandmere---I do like Du Pareil Au Meme and always go there, but it's been hit & miss for me.

Here are my problems, MDH is not a shopper for a very long time so I have to be quick. If I know the locations and don't take him on a "children's clothes oddessy"(as he calls it) he's better.

My other problem is the 4 yr. old---she'll wear only dresses. Last year I mistakenly picked a skirt & top outfit and she has yet to wear it--ugh! The 8 yr. old is easier although when I asked her what I should bring this year, she wants a dress also.

I'd love to go to Galleries Lafayette but I'd never get my husband in a "mall" without bribery.

Neither the main stores for Printemps or Galleries Lafayette on Blvd Hausmann are malls or in a mall but granted they are very large stores, both have more than one building.

I found beautiful children's clothes at both stores--some same as US but certainly not most. If you get the 10% discount card for non-EU citizens at the info desk (which doesn't apply to all brands), that helps with prices and once you've done all your shopping, go to the Detaxe bureau in the store to get about another 12% tax back.

My husband is shopping averse. Faced with either in and out several boutiques or an hour or so in one store, he would opt for the latter. Just a suggestion.

I'm glad you posted this question. I'm not a grandma yet --they aren't even married for heavens sakes (although nowadays that doesn't stop anyone from having kids)so I've adopted (so to speak)a few of the neighbourhood kids to fill in for the awaited grandkids. I too will be looking for kids clothes/accessories as a treat for helping their Mom look after the house while we are gone.
I a friend emailed me about the store called BonPoint-I googled it and found 8 stores (1,2,6,7,8,16,&17th districts)in Paris. The owners also have a shop called MERCI at 111 BLVD BEAUMARCHAIS (3rd)which apparently on the second floor has the kids clothes at markdown prices-maybe out of season?). Both shops look very interesting.
Have fun shopping!

My sister-in-law needed to get children's clothing for friends and looked in quite a few of the name shops (Petit Bateau, Du Pareil au Même, Tartine et Chocolat, Jacadi and quite a few others. But she was raised as a reasonable woman and saw the prices and knew how long a small child will wear any individual item, so she ended up buying a ton of stuff from Monoprix, Carrefour and Auchan at about 25% of the price of the lovely kiddy shops.

However, you are more than welcome to assist the French economy if money is no object.

I am aware of prices and try to find good deals, but I am only buying 2 dresses and would like them to be different from what I can buy here.

The 8 yr. old dress is then worn again by the 4 yr old. I have gotten so many wonderful comments on the things I have chosen in the past. It's just a fun thing for a grandma to do. I'd rather shop for them than buy another thing for myself---but that's just me. I guess I will boost the French economy a little.

When I get home from work tonight I will look up all the suggestions you have made.

TPAYT, thank you for posting this. From your original post I'm pretty sure you are the person who responded to my question about children's clothing. I was able to find the store you mention on Montparnasse and Raspail and it was very nice. Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time when we were there so I wasn't able to find just the right outfits (for twins) but now that I know where it is, I'm sure we'll be back.

We were in Paris after a trip to Brittany so I returned loaded down with little Brittany striped shirts, slickers and outfits (some wonderfully on sale for 60% off, lucky me) for the twins who are in a sailing family. I was also unable to resist the adorable little cheap smocked sundresses with sailboats that we found in the markets. They are made in Madagascar, but hey, it was a french colony.

I've always hated shopping while on trips but this time was great fun.

There is a Pom d'Api on rue du Four in the 6th, right off rue Bonaparte. I drew an outline of her foot and took it with me (again, when I only had the one grandchild , and they insisted on selling me a size too big. I sent it back (not inexpensive, as you might imagine), and they sent me the smaller size and did not charge me for postage.
But it was very cute!

And I can certainly identify with your enjoyment of shopping for your granddaughters!

Julie---so glad you found the shop on Montparnase and Raspail, it's one of my favorites and this year I will make note or the name. I agree on their stock as last year I did find an adorable outfit but not many sizes.

cigalechanta---thanks for that website, awsume!

grandmere---what a good idea, draw a picture of their foot. I've had people comment on my "string". I measure the girls, wrist to wrist, chest, neck to knee, inseam, and mark it on a string. It's very little to stick in my pocket and I can measure the clothes.

judy---I will check out Gerard Darel.

decee---just wait. Everyone tells you about being a grandma and you think it will be nice. Then that baby grabs you by the heart and you are hooked.

I love it when they have a program at school and wear their "French outfits". Kerouac---that's why I boost your economy! No offense meant.

Don't worry Kerouac always makes comments on thoose those who buy expensive bags or go to high priced restaurants.

Julie, I loved seeing the Breton children in those striped shirts.

I found some great clothes for my daughters a couple of years ago at "Teenage," 3 Rue Mesnil near the Trocadero. Despite the name, it sells clothes for ages 3 to 14. Great selection of dresses and casual jeans/tees from designers like Sonia Rykiel, Kenzo etc.
