Cheap lodging in Zurich
We are looking for inexpensive lodging for a night or two in Zurich. I know that's an oxymoron but I have found a few possibilities.
Has anyone stayed at the Pension St. Josef? It looks quite nice and run CHF125 for a double/hall bath, incl breakfast.
What about the Hotel Martahaus? CHF100 double/hall bath, bfast. It's a bigger place, more like a hostel.
Lastly, City Backpacker? It's a private hostel. CHF92 for a double/hall bath, no bfast. It's the cheapest but, since this is the end of a 3-week vacation, not the nicest.
This is lower end than most of what I read about on this site but we don't need luxury, just clean and safe.

I would suggest trying Priceline. 4* bids have come in as low as $65 US + taxes and fees. You might or might not be successful at that price, but if you are considering higher prices for places with the bathroom down the hall, it wouldn't hurt to try. See http://www.biddingfortravel.com or http://www.betterbidding.com .

A friend of mine always stays at the Pension St. Josef and raves about it. Location is very convenient withing walking distance from the train station. Pretty quiet too.
The Martahaus is a bit closer to the center on a busier street. Just walked by the other day. Looked very busy. They do have a cafe where you can meet other guests and have a chat. I think, it's a good place to stay, just like the Pension St. Josef.
As for the City Backpacker. Hm... looks a bit run down and the immediate neighbourhood is pretty busy (restaurants, bars, etc.).
Good luck and book early. Both, St. Josef and Marthahaus are very popular all year round being among the few good budget places in town.

I love the Pension St. Joseph. ( Ursula, am I the friend you referred to?) I have only been to Zurich as a solo traveler and I feel very safe there. My single rooms were small but the bathrooms were great.
It is an easy walk from the bahnhof. It is clean and safe; sounds like just what you are looking for.
