Cheap flights within Europe?
Is there such a thing? Or are we going to be spending more money on a flight than on our hotel rooms? I can't find a flight from Dublin to Rome for under $400.00 USD is this normal? I don't know where to look.
HELP!!!!

Try breaking it up when you search.

Dublin-LON (or more specifically, STN (London Stansted), or Brussels. Try www.ryanair.com for this part.

Then try Rome or other Itaky destinations on www.virgin-express.com or on www.go-fly.co.uk to name just a couple. STN-MIL is also cheap on www.klmuk.com (or .co.uk), I think). Buzzaway.com or iflybritishmidland.com are also useful. For British Midland, you will want to check into the Discover Europe Air Pass program.

Best wishes,

Rex

European airlines had a monopoly and prices within Europe were and still are high - but with though introduction of American cut rate airlines the prices are coming down. Come visit www.eurotrip.com click on message boards, then Cheap Flight forums and we'll try to help. I just got e mailed from trip.com and Aer Lingus is having a special from Brussels to Ireland but I have convert it to see what it is in $$ If you want that info just e mail me and I'll forward to you.

Here is a copy of a posting I made a few weeks ago. Maybe this will help.

Message: Several questions have come up recently on this forum about cheaper airfares in Europe. So far I have come up with 6 airlines that say they offer reduced fares. All of them seem to be based in Britain or Belgium.
Here are the web sites in no particular order:

Virgin Express: www.virgin-express.com
Ryanair: www.ryanair.ie
Go: www.go-fly.com
British Midland:www.britishmidland.com
Buzz: www.buzzaway.com
easyJet: www.easyjet.com

Hi Katie. National Geographic Traveler recommended www.europebyair.com. They used to have a three flight minimum, but at least temporarily they have dropped that restriction so all direct flights are $99 each way, if there's a connection, I think its $99 for each leg. I just booked a flight from Barcelona to Lisbon for $99.

Hi, Kati,
Many of the cheapos require that tickets be bought before you leave N. America.
Here are some more web sites to ckeck out:
http://www.etn.nl/
http://www.europebyair.com/
http://www.flysas.com/airpass.html
http://www.britishmidland.com/ (Oh wait, you have that one.)
Some of the Europe by Air carriers are not well known in the US (nor, I suspect, terribly well known outside their board rooms,) but there are good choices. Beware of having to pay for separate and double-back legs in order to go from A to B via C. Still, it beats the tar out of the old approach, and often (usually?) beats train fares (but those are city center to city center, remember, not to exotic Luton or Stanstead).
Kristi: When you return, would you please post here about your experience with that flight, i.e. any trouble getting on the flight you booked, were you bumped, etc.? That's an outrageous price for intra-Europe travel & I was afraid to try it myself. Please let us know your thoughts!

Holly, it is awfully cheap but I've seen europebyair recommended so I thought I'd give it a shot since I couldn't find any other cheap alternatives. I think there are only 16 participating airlines, most of them smaller carriers; we are flying Portugalia and I believe we have a reservation for a certain flight although you can buy open ended coupons for $99 each. The rep said our ticket was still considered open ended and that we could still change the flight if we needed to. I'll be sure and post the results when I return.

I never could manage to get a ticket on Ryanair last year. Their web site claimed to require european residence and I couldn't find a travel agent in the US who would book them. I might have found one who would have done it with a service charge that would have wiped out any savings. I flew with Virgin Express. Watch them for very optomistic connections coming back from Rome.
