"College buddy" implies you're a student - if so (or your under 26) check out:

Also www.studentuniverse.com. Both them and STA have great airfares, but only on limited itineraries. I was able to get (in 2000, though) tickets roundtrip August Miami to London for $400 (including taxes!) one year through them.

Cheapest flights are often out of JFK since there are more carriers that fly JFK to Heathrow. Out of EWR, I think Continental is the only non-stop and they fly into Gatwick.
Your best options will be if your travel dates are flexible. Look on Ba.com (British Air). They have a feature that shows you prices within a 2 week period. If you're willing to fly on Dec 24, 25 or better still 28th, rates are good.
Checking on sidestep.com, cheapest fare appears to be on American, JFK to LHR for $374 including tax. Leave on the 24th return on Jan 9.

Like everyone else has said, flexibility is definitely the key here. I am going to London in 2 weeks, and when booking my flight (I booked with Air Canada online) the prices doubled and tripled depending on the date. I managed to book my flight at about $450(CAD). The next day, the same flight was listed at around $1300. So if your dates are variable, shop around and you can probably find yourself a good price online.

use travelocity to search for a flight. Do not put in a travel date, instead check the box for "my dates are flexible" or something to that effect and the search engine will search by price showing you the dates that are cheapest. By remaining flexible as stated in the posts above, you should find something decent out of JFK.
