my daughter has the same problem but in june and she came up with the ryan air solution. she also came up with flying into tallin and taking the train whichis only an 1.5 hr trip.

Jay I wpould be surprised if the train from Tallinn took 1.5 hours- are you sure you're not confusing with the ferry or hydrafoil?
An option for cheap fares although not as cheap as Ryanair is Finnguild.-www.finn-guild.org. You have to join and pay a membership fee-which is not massive-about £22 for a family, but they are cheaper than the normal prices quoted. They have just undercut a Trailfinders quote by £200 + per person for a convoluted trip taking in helsinki and Riga.

I suppose you'll be flying in from the U.S. Thus, I would be surprised if purchasing direct flights to Finland on some major carrier such as AA (who codeshare with Finair in the Oneworld Alliance) would not be the cheapest and most reasonable option regarding the time spent on planes and on transfer.
However, if it turns out that you can grab a deal somewhere to take you to one of the major European airports, jay's suggestion of proceeding by flying into Tallinn might be worth looking into.
Air Estonia has some pretty good fares usually and you can indeed proceed quickly to Helinki by ferry or express ferry, which are oparated by Estonian shipping companies Tallink and Linda Line, Finnish Silja Line and Norwegian Nordic Jet Line (these companies operate express ferries; Silja and Tallink have ordinary ones besides that; Finnish operators Eckero Line and Viking Line also operate ferries but only conventional ones). You might as well take advantage of the situation and proceed only the next day after having spent some time exploring Tallinn's beautifully preserved Old Town.
