Stayed twice at Chevre d'Or and eaten at both. Our first visit to Chevre d'Or in 1995 was fantastic. But the last visit to Chevre d'Or (in June 2000) was very disappointing. If I were going back, I'd try Chateau Eza. Keep in mind that some of the rooms at Chevre d'Or are very dark and small. Make sure you understand the room you're getting. Some of the "balcony" rooms, aren't really balconies, but rather enclosed "sunporches" with sliding windows that open up.

Thanks for the comments. I've checked & Chateau Chevre d'Or seems to have lots of availability & Chateau Eze is very few rooms, which is unusual for high season in May. Any more comparisons to help me decide. We're travelling with 2 couples & I want to make the best choice for charm, character & service although they both appear very good on Relais & Chateaux & Small Leading Hotel sites.

We stayed at the Chvre d'Or in October 1999. We were in Room 8. It is a two story room with sitting area down and bedroom and bath up. The rooms were'nt big but they were well-appointed. Ours was yellow and blue with windows that looked out over the countryside down to the sea. If Chevre d'Or has availability, you could insist on room 8 and another of similar view/configuration before agreeing to book.
I love the bar at the Chevre d'Or, both inside that seems like a room in a castle and outside that is near a tiny non-swimming pool but provides a ledge on which you can look down over the coast below.

If it's warm while you're there you should, however, book for dinner the table at the Chateau Eze that sits on its own small (maybe even cramped, but worth it) balcony overlooking the coast with twinkling lights on the hill down to the sea.
