Carol, you may want to try a nice little resort town called Filzmooths,Austria. I'm not sure of the correct spelling, but I stayed there 2yrs. ago.I would recommend this little village to anyone. If your going now the chairlift from the mountain ends in the heart of the village. I'm told at the top you can ski all the way to Salzburg,Austria.(30km) In the summer there are many hiking trails. About 20km from the German border. Enjoy!!!

Carol--
Austria is my favorite country; I've been there many times and I love the smaller villages. The problem is that almost all of the Alpine villages are so beautiful and quaint that it's very difficult to recommend a few. One way to approach it is to stick to a smaller part of Austria, so I'll give you some recommendations by region:
(1) Tirol: The Stubai valley, southwest from Innsbruck, has a number of lovely villages along its length, as well as the most incredible scenery in the whole area.
(2) Vorarlberg
(3) Carinthia: mainly areas south and east.
(4) Salzkammergut: several mountains and valleys around the lakes.

Although in my opinion Switzerland has the more charming small villages, I can recommend two villages in Austria, too.

Westendorf (close to Kitzbuehel) and Alpbach (close to Kitz, too) are claimed to be the two most beautiful villages with old wooden houses, flowers on the balconies ... They won a contest of Austrian villages.

Sorry Wayne, but I don't agree with you concerning the Stubaital.

Ingo
