Central Europe Itinerary help please!

I am at the very early stages of attempting to cobble together a 28 day central Europe trip.

My initial thought was to fly into Krakow and out of Dubrovnik as follows:

Krakow - Budapest - Vienna - ?Slovenia?? - Plitvice - Split - Dubrovnik.

I am not sure about the Slovenia portion, and where to go there.

Also, we will be travelling by public transportation, and I have some LONG train rides in here, which I would like to minimize if possible - any good stops between some of my destinations?

I am thinking that Krakow is just a bit to far out of my range, but it sounds like a wonderful place to visit.

Any suggestions, comments?

One last snag I just learned about Krakow. I am going to use British Airways points for the flights, and all flights to Krakow seem to be from Gatwick. My flight from North America arrives at Heathrow. Changing airports sounds like a real hassle. I can connect at Heathrow for flights to Warsaw, Vienna or Budapest. Arriving in Warsaw would allow me to still see Poland . . . but does add yet another train trip. Now I am really thinking that maybe I should drop Krakow. . .

If I remember correctly, Warsaw to Krakow is a very short train ride. Don"t miss Krakow. I'd go back tommorow!

Thanks John, all of what I have read on Krakow really has me interested. Maybe two nights in Warsaw on arrival is the best bet. I will look into the train between Warsaw and Krakow.

I am now thinking of something along the lines of:

Warsaw - 2 nights
Krakow - 3 nights
Vienna - 3 nights
Budapest - 3 nights
Ljubljana - 2 nights
Bled - 2 nights
Plitvice Park - 1 night
Split - 2 nights
Hvar - 2 nights
Dubrovnik - 3 nights

I can still add a night or two in there, any suggestions for where, or places I should make changes?

Flying out of Dubrovnik on BA also arrives in Gatwick, which would then require a transfer to Heathrow.

Thanks issy, I actually did realise that! We plan on staying a night or two in London on the way back, so the change of airports isn't really an issue in that direction.

Is Eger doable as a daytrip from Budapest, or should we plan on staying there for 1 night?

Eger's a nice town. We arrived one day about 2 PM, walked around the town, had dinner, stayed overnight (Hotel Romantik--nice place), left about 10 AM. Didn't sample the wine caves, or see the surrounding landscape except on the way to Krakow
