Cell Phone in Algarve

I'm from Canada but will be spending a couple of months in the Algarve this winter. Obviously, I'll need a phone. Should I bring my I-phone from Canada or purchase a phone in Portugal. Any help navigating this would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Portugal is not an especially crime ridden country but obviously don't leave your phone on a restaurant table, by itself while you go to the gents. Assuming you use your iphone for things then I'd bring it and you'll find that most places have reasonable wifi and some shopping areas have it in the streets. In terms of gps, I assume you know that you don't need a phone signal for GPS, so if you have a walking/driving map app and you have already downloaded the map of the area, again you just use GPS to help you get about. Similarly most phone camera apps don't need a phone signal.

So, I guess you only need a phone signal to make telephone calls. At which point you need a sim or an e-sim. Your Canadian sim should work but might prove more expensive than you are used to. Not knowing your usage I cannot advise but you can pick up sims in supermarkets or phone shops.
