Jessica, if you are concerned and can avoid the penalty, then why not look into rebooking. If your upcoming trip is say, this next June then some places may be booked up. But Mykonos has tons and TONS of hotels, I am sure you could find something that gets better reviews.

Thyra-
Thanks for the reply. The reason I initially booked Cavo Tagoo was because I had read some great things about it, namely in Fodor's publication on Greece...they have it starred. I was/am more curious what people's experiences have been, if one or two people have had a bad experience, it might not necessarily be a bad hotel, could have just been one of those things...
I want to know if anyone else has had a bad experience, if all of the rooms are small and dark, and if the staff is unfriendly, or if I am discarding a perfectly nice hotel based on one or two people's opinions that I have read here in the forum.
Well, if you have concerns about the rooms you should try emailing, writing or calling the hotel directly and make a specific request for a certain type of room, politely of course. I did this several times with different hotels in Greece last October and was pleased with every hotel we booked, with the exception of our hotel on Mykonos.... (which was NOT the Cavo Tagoo) maybe just drop them a line and let them know that you would prefer an ocean view... airy room.. whatever and see what happens. I have stayed and eaten at several hotels or restaurants that other people had bad experiences with. A lot of it depends on you, on who you deal with, and what your level of expectation is. Two people can stay at the same hotel the same week and be served by the same employees, one will post the the hotel was crowded, dirty and the employees rude, while the other person will report that the staff was top notch the room lovely and the entire place immaculate... go figure
.
Trust your instincts... if you are happy with what you have learned about this hotel so far based upon YOUR interaction with them then don't worry about it. If you will be stressing all the time that you made a wrong decision then try to change it.
Either way, travel involves a certain degree of uncertaintly... you can never be %100 positive that you picked the BEST hotel or restaurant possible. You can just do your best and keep an open mind. I know it may be the trip of a lifetime... but hey, you may arrive and discover it's not all you thought it would be.... hey, you will be on Mykonos, how bad can it be? Go out have a drink on the beach and take notes for next time.

We had tentatively planned to stay at Cavo Tagoo, based on its recommendations, but we were advised against it because of its location. It's only about a 10 to 15 minute walk from town, but at night you have to walk on a very dark and trecherous road with speeding vehicles flying by you. We saw it when we were there and were glad we didn't stay there. Of course, if you want to take taxis all the time or rent a car it might be fine, but not sure where you'd park the car if you drove "to town".

Thanks for all of your advice. I am thinking of Semeli hotel, which seems to get rave reviews, and is near town as well. As I am going in late April, I am not so concerned with being on a beach. Has anyone out there actually stayed in Cavo Tagoo and had a good experience? How about Semeli?

I haven't stayed at any of the hotels mentioned, but we did stay at the Hotel Leto last summer. It is a great hotel, overlooking the harbor in Mykonos and close to everything. It's fun to rent a scooter to get around, especially for going to the beach. I wouldn't have wanted to be outside of town in Mykonos; everything we wanted to do was in town except for going to the beach. I recommend the Leto (which was recommended by someone on this website). Sorry I can't answer about the others.

We stayed at the Cavo Tagoo several years ago and loved it. It is located on a slope slightly above the town. We had a lovely room a bit up the hill that had a terrific view of Mykonos. Our room had french doors and a little patio. The first night we stayed in a room near the lobby and it was a bit noisy so the next day we moved to our lovely room with a view. The breakfast room and breakfast were great. It is a 10 minute walk from town but when we were there, there was a small bus stop near the hotel. We took a cab back one night after dinner. The hotel is considered one of the best in Mykonos. I believe they have a website so you may want to have a look at it. We enjoyed this hotel very much.
