Cats and Greece/Turkey

My partner has a cat phobia - its a genuine phobia - but we would both love a sea holiday in Turkey or Greece where reportedly cats are everywhere. Is this true and if so are there any areas that are exceptions to that.

My 1st time to Greece in 2001 I was in Athens, Mykonos and Santorini. There were cats everywhere. When we would eat at outdoor cafes they would come us to us.

In 2002 I was in Meteora and Corfu, I don't remember there being hardly any.

I'm curious about the Turkey part, I'll be there in June. I love animals though!

We were in Turkey in 1985 and were astounded at the cats that wandered around the tables at outdoor cafes. One evening we were enjoying our cocktails at our hotel at a table by the Bospherus. One cat was particularly annoying, so we asked our waiter if he could send kitty away. Well! He picked up the cat & dropped him over the wall into the Bospherus. We were shocked and horrified that our complaint had precipitated such a dreadful deed.
We later realized that there was a very nice cat-saving ledge on the other side of the wall.
But another thing we noticed was that all the cats were teen-agers. What happened to the grown-ups?
Do I really want to know?

I would recommend going to a hypnotist or some other pro that deals with phobias to try to curb the fear rather than let fear of felines keep you from traveling to Turkey or Greece.

Good luck!

I had heard about large numbers of stray cats in Greece but didn't see that many last month. Just a few cats wandering around, not really more than I see here in Massachusetts, couldn't tell whether they were strays or not. But a high percentage of the ones I saw were calico cats, which struck me as strange.

A couuple years ago, we visited Athens and 3 islands - Lesvos (near Turkey), Mykonos and Santorini. We saw cats everywhere, but I liked it as I was missing mine from home. There was even a cat who lived in the airport at Santorini. Our flights ere delayed for hours and hours - finally cancelled. And this cat was there the whole time.
