I was uncomfortable driving in the UK and will avoid it if possible in the future.
But the gear shift on the left was not a significant problem. For me it was, just stting on the right, driving on the left side and narrow roads.

In addition to the stickshift on the left, there is also the issue of looking over the left shoulder when backing up. I found this to be the most difficult coordinate remapping exercise of all.
For someone that has never driven a car with the steering wheel on the right, it might be wise to rent the car in some small suburb of London rather than directly in the heart of the city (e.g., Waterloo, etc.). This provides a little more room for practice.

I think this is a classic case of YMMV. Some will find adapting to a RHD vehicle easy, some will appreciate an automatic, and still others will be unable to handle it at all.
I have driven a LHD car in the UK, and didn't find it challenging (there are multi-lingual signs all the way from the Channel ports to London reminding drivers to drive to the left!) The only time I remember having to manually process a situation was when confronted with a roundabout and no other traffic. Overtaking (passing) is problematical, though, because seeing the passing lane from the left seat is a stretch.
