Carrying Wine to the US
We have friends coming to visit us in California from Germany. They will clear customs in Charlotte, NC, then fly on to SFO. They would like to bring with them one bottle of whisky, one bottle of schnaps, and three bottles of wine.
The guidance I got from a different posting,
"Getting Your Wine Through Customs"
http://www.winespectator.com/Wine/Sp...ollecting.html
suggests that they might be able to bring the three bottles over their one liter per person limit if they are willing to pay a small duty on the extras.
As the Wine Spectator article cited is nine years old I'm wondering if anyone has any recent experience. One friend carries a British passport, the other a German. They are not returning US citizens, but, rather visitors.
Comments, please.
Thanks

As I got no reply to this message I called the US Customs Service office in Charlotte. An inspector there told me that they would only have to pay IRS tax and customs duty of about $3 per bottle.
I had a side question about their bringing me some canned sausages. The inspector said that was a definite no-no.

BigBlue, many German wines are available in the Bay Area, as are lots of whiskies. Unless what they have is hard to find, they may not need to lug it over. Have them check www.klwines.com (K&L, now on 4th Street south of Market) to see if they stock what they were planning to bring. It could save them a hassle.
