I agree 'adeben', some here seem more intent on nit picking than recognising reality!
While I habitually carry my passort on my person while outside of Oz (for 'get out of Dodge' resons), it usually much more convenient to produce my NSW Driver's Licence. I've never had any problems in Europe with it being acceptable as personal ID for a wide range of purposes, including many "official" ones.
The world is, however, changing and I can see that some sort of ID that carries an ICAO MRTD information [http://www.icao.int/mrtd/overview/overview.cfm] or similar will become more or less mandatory within a decade, if not sooner. Passports generally already do this, but there are also some other documents, such as the Italian ID smartcard, which also have it.
Cheers,
Bill
