CARRY-ON RULES --USAIR TO ITALY

USAirways site has only vague information regarding allowable carry ons. Can anyone confirm if a carry on bag and a personal item (backpack) are ok? Do you have to include your purse as an extra or put it in carry on to comply? We are leaving for Rome next week--direct from Philadelphia--any experience to report.

Much appreciated!

Regards,
Robyn France

Skeptic that I am, I checked their web site. Vague is hardly a fair description, their FAQ says, "International customers are subject to different free baggage allowances and excess charges, depending on destination." Yikes, there must be some word for vaguer than vague!

I suggest that you call them directly about your specific flight: I suppose it's related to which plane is actually serving your flight.

On my USAirways flight to London last year, I took a standard wheel-aboard, about 22x16x10, plus a tote bag, without any problems. This was on an Airbus 330, which was lots of fun, with the personal video screens. IIRC, by digging around the web site I was able to get a layout of the plane; that part might describe the carryon allowances. But I'd still call.

Robyn--

Have a wonderful trip!

We've used USAirways from Philadelphia several times for trans-Atlantic flights, the latest just last month.

We took one carry-on each (a roll-aboard and a garment-bag-type suitcase) and one personal item (a large purse for me, a back-pack for my husband).

As I recall the site info before our trip, they allow a carry-on and one personal item and list personal items as purse, back-pack, computer, or briefcase. So, I think, if you have both a purse and a back-pack as well as a carry-on, you might have to stash the purse inside the backpack to get through security and then onto the plane.

(On my first flight after 9/11, I also brought along a newspaper in a plastic bag. Had to fit the newspaper into my suitcase so I would not the exceed allowable baggage limit.)

Greetings and thank you for the information---sounds like the backpack and the carry on will be ok--that was our main concern. Really you would think that the airlines could provide specifics in the ticket or on the website--doesn't that seem a peculiar way to communicate a "mandatory rule".

Thanks to you all I have what I need.

Take care,
Robyn France

Robyn
Take the advice of calling the airline itself and checking on the regulations for your flight. It may vary depending on the type of plane they use--some have more overhead room than others.
