Car rentals in Italy
I'm traveling from the U.S. I'd like to rent a car in Trento to drive to Bolzano. Which rental car companies have you used to rent cars and should I use an international firm such as Avis?

We're going in 2 weeks and after checking prices, decided on Kemwell.
I read some posts to try the Italian sites instead of American sites for better prices with Autoeurope, but I never could get that to work. Maybe you would have better luck.

I've used Avis with success. Generally if you want an automatic transmission (rare in Europe) you're better off calling to make the reservation rather than just doing it online. They have to be specifically requested. Just call the US 800 number and ask if you should call directly to Italy for the reservation. If not, they should take care of it for you.

I think the best car company in Europe is Sixt. It's really big in Europe. We rented a really nice mini van with GPS in Rome and traveled all over Amalfi Coast and Naples for 2 years in a row. I got a really great rate for the rental at DestinationCoupons.com and a free upgrade. Suggestion: ALWAYS get the full insurance in Italy, even if it's expensive, it's cheaper than fixing the car. If you have never driven in Italy, get the GPS. It's awesome!
