Car Rental Rates?

Hello. I need help. I'm getting quotes for rental cars for 11 days...basic automatic micra w/ theft & CDW...and the quotes are skyrocketing all over...from $485 to over $600 US dollars. Is this what I should expect to pay? Thanks!

we rented a car in frankfurt in april from auto europe. we paid less than 200.00 u.s. dollars for an audi...it was not automatic though. we also did not get the collision coverage because our credit card covered it. check out their website.

I just reserved a rental car here in Prague for mid-August. I reserved the smallest size with a/c (for highway driving it's really necessary, although I do feel guilty!) -- an Opel Vectra -- and it's costing me approx. $50 per day, for the 3-5-day rate. It's about the size of a Honda Accord, maybe a tiny bit smaller. If my credit card didn't cover insurance, it would be a TON more. This (Czech Republic and Eastern Europe in general) is an expensive car rental market.

Christy,
I think Ireland has some of the highest car rental rates in Europe. We rented a Volvo station wagon last yr for 8 days [2 couples]. The prices you quote are about right. However, I know there are some folks on AOL Ireland board w/a lot of knowledge. Have you looked there at all...great source for Ireland travel.
One of the best vacations ever. Have a great trip!
Elaine

Automatics can bump up the price by a lot since they are not nearly as common in europe as they are in the states. CDW is also pretty expensive. it can be up to $20 per day in some countries! check with your credit card to see if they cover it. my advice would be to rent a manual shift vehicle if you can-they are so much cheaper. WHat company did you call? I've found Hertz to have decent prices most of the time. Good luck.
Thanks to everyone for the responses. I think I'm going with AutoEurope...they came in about $30 cheaper than Hertz. Thanks for the tips about the AOL boards, I have to check them out. Have a great day!!
Christy
