We'll be flying into and out of Rome as part of a visit to Tuscany next spring. My initial thoughts are to take the train to Florence and stay they a couple of nights and then pick up our car for the trip through Tuscany. We'll most likely stay in Castellina in Chianti.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to car rental agencies to use or a better suggestion for picking up the car as to pick up point to make it as easy as possible without having to brave the city drivers of Rome or Florence.
Someone had suggested picking the car up in Chiusi but the train connections there aren't very convenient and it seems like mst rental companies don't have a pick up station there.
I'm open to any and all suggestions for this.

We just returned from a trip where we flew into Florence, picked up our rental in downtown Florence (a little tricky, but not too bad departing the city), and then spent a week driving south, ending in Orvieto, where the train station is directly across the street from the Hertz drop-off. We took the train into Rome, and flew home from there. Hope this helps....

If you'ld prefer not pick up the car in Florence, it's about a 15E cab ride to FLR airport.

Took me and the wife 1 hour to navigate the less than 1 mile trip out of Florence. With the one way streets and then more one way streets ..it was challenging. On the other hand..driving out of FCO was very easy..as it is well out of the Rome city congestion.

I have a similar question to this. We want to get a train in Florence, after staying there 1 night, to go to San Gimignano. Do you know what areas I should be looking at for a hotel in Florence ... fairly convenient to the train station?

there are plenty of hotels very convenient to the train station. Just be sure to ask for a room on the inner courtyard away from the street, or double-paned windows! The streets are very noisy all night around the station.

The problem may be the difficulty of taking the train to San G. I'm not sure there's a station closer than Siena. Maybe someone knows more about this than I. You may want to look into taking a bus to San G.

Dolores...you can do a oneday trip from florence to siena and san gimignano...bus leaves from terminal by main train station. Ambassador hotel is right across the street from the station.
