Car needed for Florence

We are renting a car in Rome and driving through Tuscany for a few days, and then going to Florence. Once in Florence, should we keep the car for getting around, or should we turn it in? I'm trying to figure out if you can walk to see most of the city. Any thoughts?

You really don't want a car while you're in Florence; you'll just have to pay to park it somewhere (probably on the other side of the river). The central city (where nearly all tourist attractions are) is a pedestrian zone.

We returned our car to the Florence airport, easier than in town and took the shuttle bus into town. That worked great but the airport signs are a bit hard to see.

Don't need a car. City center doesn't
allow non business traffic. Everywhere else parking is very tight. Plus the
scooters & pedestrians will drive you crazy. You can walk to all of the sites within Florence. Bus service is prteyy decent to some of the towns on the outskirts. If anything visit the outer towns before dropping of your car.

We rented a car in Florence to drive through Tuscany and parked it briefly in front of our hotel while we picked up our luggage. In less than 15 minutes, a scooter was parked immediately in front of us (we had to lift it up to get out) and two vegetable trucks had double parked next to us, hemming us in. You don't need a car in Florence at all--unless you enjoy frustration. Take the bus to any sites (like Piazza Michelangelo) that you can't get to by foot.
