car necessary

Are there places to base where one does not need a car?

Has anyone used any local guides that you would reccommend for a day or a few days especially for hiking?

What specific geographic area are you asking about?

In cities a car is not only not necessary but a liability. Therefore there are many places where one does not need a car.

And of course, if you take a cruise, a car isn't necessary at all. You are based ship-board! I think kapmap has made the assumption that this question would only appear under the location he/she selected when posting the initial query. kappie: all messages show up in the left-hand column regardless of which section of the forum you thought you were posting to.

This was kapmap's first & only post since Oct of last year.

But, to answer the question, most major cities will have day tours. Lots of hiking in Bavaria and Italy.

Kapmap, where are you looking to go?

I am sorry -- I was asking about Ireland in particular. We have never been and I changed my mind about not going overseas this year so I would like to go the second half of September. I was looking to see if there was a way to avoid renting a car and having to navigate the roads but I am afraid that it is not possible.

That is what I was trying to get feedback on.

Also, we have found that personal guides along the way really help make the trip because they are a wealth of information and usually end up showing us things we never knew about. So I wondered if anyone had any experiences with guides for a day or several days.

Thank you. I must admit that I was surprised that someone knew when I last posted -- I didn't remember that.

It's not that some remembered. Your entire posting history is as simple as clicking on your own name (true for anyone, not just you)).

Best wishes,
