Car In Lindau

After travelling through Southern Germany by car for 12 days we are staying in Lindau for 3 nights before travelling on to Munich. Will we still need the car in Lindau or is most of the sightseeing done by ferries. Thinking of returning the car to the rental company in Lindau if possible and catching the train into Munich as we will not need it once there.

In my experience you would certainly not use a car in Lindau.

Most of Lindau Insel, the old part of the city is pedestrian as I recall. I think there is a ferry to Mainau Insel (the flower island). Also on the lake is a wonderful little town named Meersburg that is worth a visit. I don't know if there are boats that go there.

I actually started to drive into Lindau once and it looked as though a car would be a handicap and a hassle. I turned around and went to Meersburg instead. I loved Meersburg!

I was in Lindau and Meersburg last month. Lindau is picturesque and car free. During the summer months, you can take a ferry almost anywhere, although some of them aren't cheap. You can rent bikes and bike to Rorschach and return by ferry. Meersburg is definitely a must. Walk around the tiny medieval town and you'll feel like your in another century.

Hi hh,

We were on Lindau Insel a couple of weeks ago.

Parking is very scarce.

Streets are almost all pedestrian.

Very easy to take ferries between the major sight-seeing towns.

What's your budget for a Lindau hotel?

Hi hh,

>We're staying 3 nights at the Hotel Eiscafe Schrier. I hope it is OK<

We were there a couple of weeks ago.

Loved it.

The staff is very friendly and accomodating.

If you want to drop off your stuff before turning in the car, follow the signs to Lindau Insel. Once on the island, go all the way West to the railroad station.

You can't drive on the seafront. Go East on Ludwigstrasse. Farbergasse is a little alley on your right, just past Inselgraben. Have the passenger tell the hotel that you have arrived.

If there is no one at the desk. They will be in the cafe.

The bus comes down Ludwigstrasse. Don't leave your car, as you will have to move if the bus comes. The hotel folks will show you what to do.

We were in room no. 1.2 It's on the 1st flr (US 2nd), with a garden terrace overlooking the harbor. I highly recommend it.

We will return to Lindau.

Enjoy your visit.
