topping as you are sliding onto the third page.
I have not been to the amalfi coast. But,
If you type amalfi and car in the text search box at the top of this page, it may pull up past postings.
as far as Rome, I have never purchased tickets to the Vatican and had no trouble getting in either time.
but, if you wish to visit the Borghese Galleries with all those lovely sculptures, you must purchase tickets in advance!!
Have fun!

While this site is very useful, please don't use it as your only resource; you should invest in one or more guidebooks that can help with basic information like this.
To the best of my knowledge, you cannot get advance tickets to the Vatican Museums. I have never waited more than 15 minutes in line, but if you are there in August it may be more crowded so lines may be longer. The website for the Museums is at http://mv.vatican.va, they give opening and closing times. The Museums are closed on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month when admission is free and they are very crowded. Many of us on this site recommend Scala Reale tour guides for their excellent tour of the Vatican and the Museums. Take a look at www.scalareale.org. for information.
I assume you know that St Peter's basilica is not part of the Vatican Museums, and there is no ticket required to enter the church, although there generally is a line as there is security. The line moves very rapidly in my experience. Note that there is a dress code for the church: no shorts on men or women, and women must have shoulders covered. This is quite strictly enforced. No dress code in the Museums (which includes the Sistine Chapel).
As to needing a car in Amalfi, I don't feel it is at all necessary. Doubly so in August when it will be very crowded. Parking is hard to find and expensive, if you are going to rent a car find out if you hotel has parking (a lot don?t') and what their daily charge it. Gas is $4.50 a gallon, the rental itself is expensive, an the roads are very twisty and crowded and you if you are the one driving your don't get to enjoy the stupendous views. A train will get you to Naples from Rome easily and quickly, and you can then take another train, a bus, a ferry, a taxi or a private car with driver to get to the coast. Once on the coast, there is a good public bus system, and an excellent ferry system. A good guidebook will give you other tips on getting around the coast.
