Capri to Positano & Amalfi Coast-with or without car? help!

We desparately need some guidance. We are planning a trip in early July. We have 12 nights. So far we are staying 2 nights in Naples. We plan to take the boat to Capri where we will stay 2 nights. We were going to rent a car in Sorrento, but now are thinking take a boat from Capri to Positano where we are staying 2 nights. Is it easy to get a boat? We are heading down further south to Maratea where we plan to spend 2 nights. Should we do another night (maybe in Amalfi) and do the coast by bus? Then take a bus to Salerno and a train to Maratea? maybe stop in Pasteum. Looking for ideas for this area. We have 12 nights on our trip and have plans so far for 8. suggestions.

Hi coo,

There is no need for a car.

>Is it easy to get a boat?<

Yes. Your Capri hotel will give you the schedule.

>Should we do another night..and do the coast by bus?

Yes.

>...take a bus to Salerno and a train to Maratea? <

Either bus or ferry to Salerno.

>...maybe stop in Pasteum.<

Good idea.

You might want to consider spending another 2 nights on the AC or Capri, just to relax.

thanks Ira,
Appreciate the advice. We were nervous about the driving and parking. Maybe we'll stay another night in Positano and add a night in Pasteum. Take train from Salerno to Pasteum and then train to Maratea. Any suggestions of where to stay in Pasteum and what sights to not miss? Any hotel suggestions in Maratea? We're going there because our grandparents were born there.
Thanks.

I think you might find your itinerary more relaxing if you had fewer destinations. Unless your heart is set on Naples, I'd recommend staying 3 nights each in Positano and Capri, then splitting the other 6 nights at two destinations down south.

And no, you don't need a car for the Amalfi Coast. In fact, it's a hindrance, especially during July!

The problem is not renting a car. There are lots of places that will gladly do that. The real problem is parking it once you have it.

My advice is to use public transportation to get around. OK, so you relinquish some 'control' to fit their schedule, but bus & boat service is great, not that expensive, and has almost zero hassle factor.

If you wish to go to Paestum, plan ahead a day or so and go via a guided bus tour. The local Tourist Info office can point you toward a reliable travel agent who can set it up for you.

Enjoy your trip...
