What most people do in Cannes is wander up and down the Croisette and look at the marina. Old Cannes, "Le Sequet," is at the far (west) end and has some interesting sights. In the area behind the big hotels is a rabbit warren of streets with little shops, including one street that has everything food-related that you might want.
At the eastern end of the Croisette is a huge covered market, fascinating to walk around.
If you have a car, take the coastal road back to Nice via Antibes, which is also worth visiting: Picasso museum, Marché du Provence, other interesting sights.

I spent a day or so in Cannes some years ago when my then DH was on a business trip. I had a lovely time wandering round the streets of the old town, and especially the wonderful market. I still remember the taste of the olives! And I have a lovely Monet print I bought there on my bedroom wall that I have never seen anywhere else - the original is in Canada apparently.
La Croisette was rather boring, but worth seeing once, and the new part of town could have been anywhere, with all the shops like Dior, Chanel, etc.
Have a good trip.

I would pick many other places for a daytrip from Nice before Cannes. They're both cities and Nice has lots more charm. If you'll have a car, I would choose some of the hill towns as much more interesting: Eze, St. Paul de Vence, Vence, Biot.
Along the coast in the other direction, Cap Ferrat, Beaulieau, Villefranche are also charming. The Villa Ephrussi is wonderful.
