Maeve - I have two Galway B&B suggestions that are actually located in Salt Hill, a suburb that is right on Galway Bay - hold on to your hat-it's WINDY! I highly recommend that you DO NOT MISS Connemara (we stayed there in the charming town of Clifden in May of '96 for several days) and plan to take your time getting there - the scenery is breath-taking. Galway City is bustling like any big city, with lots of shopping and pubs to keep you busy for a day. I can't wait to go back - I'm envious!

I will gather info at home tonight and send it along on Thursday.

We stayed at Mrs. Ann Lambe's Ballykine House in Clonbur, Co. Galway. Telephone is 092-46150. This B&B is a B.H.S. regional award winner. It was excellent.
We were there in 1992 but I guess it's still in operation.

Maeve, My sister and I stayed at Cregg Castle, just north of Galway two years ago. It's on 165 acres and very quiet and beautiful, plus the entire family plays music by the fire at night. This is a great place to relax, but as it is outside the city, I wouldn't stay there the entire time.
Jury's Inn is a small hotel chain with near B&B prices. It is right on the water, across from the Spanish Arch and museum, and right off one of the main areas for shopping and pubs. Try The Quays (pronounced "keys") - fun pub!
Good luck.

Maeve, We thought Galway looked too "big city", so opted to stay in Oughterard. It's a tiny village west of Galway, but close enough if you want to go back to shop. We stayed at Glann House in Oughterard. This village is on Lough Corrib, and close to Clifden. We drove into Clifden for the day, and shopped, etc. It was very nice. You can fish or hire a boat on Lough Corrib. You can cross over to the area where The Quiet Man was filmed, or see Kylemore Abbey, which is closeby. This is Connemara, and it's amazing! Depending on your taste, we found Glann House our idea of the most "authentic" Irish B&B. Mrs. Clancy and her family live there, and are very accomodating, friendly, and helpful. Our last night there we ate home-baked scones at their kitchen table. This was a cozy, informal place. Our room wasn't fancy, but had a shower and good heat. The dining room was more elegant, and the breakfast delicious and bountiful. The small sitting room had an antique setee and a peat fire burning. We stayed in much fancier places in 14 days in Ireland, but wouldn't trade the Clancy's welcome and intimate setting of Glann House. We left there with a bundle of scones Mrs Clancy gave us! BTW, Oughterard is tiny and only has a couple of places to eat dinner. We ate in Clifden one night and there the other. Just depends on what your priorities are. You could always drive to Galway.
