"Norway in a Nutshell" usually refers to the following string of activities: a train ride from Myrdal to Flam, a boat ride in the Naerofjord and then a bus ride (back to Voss?) with a stop at the Stalheim hotel. You don't have to complete the activities in the same day. We got off at the Stalheim hotel and the spent the night there and then continued by bus/ferry to Balestrand. You'll love Norway! Have a great trip.

Sally-We're heading to Oslo next month, and plan on taking the Nutshell tour as well. In doing some research, you'll find the earliest day train leaving from the Oslo S (train station) for Myrdal is at 8:31am. It's approximately a 5-hr trip. Completing all components of the Nutshell tour in one day isn't possible due to the train scheduling. To complete all segments of the trip, you'll have to stay overnight at some point, otherwise, a segment of the trip-I believe the 2-hr fjord cruise-will have to be missed. There are fjord cruises that you can take in Oslo, but from what I've heard, the scenery won't compare to what you'd see on the 2-hr fjord cruise.

INHO, by far, the most knowledgable poster for Norway related information is Bjorn-he's the one who confirmed to me in a private e-mail the train schedule and very detailed information about the Nutshell tour-thanks again, Bjorn!

By doing a Search on Norway in a Nutshell, you'll find good information about it and about areas outside of Olso that are worth seeing if you have the time.

The Rick Steves Scandinavian Book has a 2-page section devoted to the Nutshell tour and what it encompasses. We found it to be very helpful. ENJOY!
