disposable lighters-YES

I traveled to Brazil over New Year's, and I carried a disposable lighter with me in my carry-on. As a matter of fact, they searched my ENTIRE carry-on at the security checkpoint, and found my disposable lighter and glass bottles. They let me keep both of them.

I'm sure that some airlines or individual guards will allow lighters through, but cigarette lighters are prohibited as flammable liquids and technically shouldn't be allowed at all, even in checked bags.

Airlines are allowed to permit small amounts (as in cigarette lighters or hairspray cans) at their discretion. But the TV coverage of bins of confiscated stuff in Boston has definitely included plenty of Bic lighters.

Like so many things nowadays, it all depends . . .

BTW, the FAA's guidance on all of this specifically PERMITS tweezers, nail clippers, and disposable razors. Metal nail files are prohibited, so if there's one on your nail clippers, it can't come in your carryon.

http://www.faa.gov/apa/pr/pr.cfm?id=1435
Are electric razors allowed? I know they weren't immediately after 9-11, but I didn't see anything either way on the website.
I just called NW Airlines. They said that electric razors are allowed, but regular (inc. disposable) were not. The FAA website listed above is from 2001; I think they have gotten stricter.

xxx, it's interesting that Northwest told you that. Their website currently says that safety razors, including disposable razors, are allowed in carry-ons. I'd looked just the other day, and rechecked after I saw your post. It's nice to see that they're helping to confuse the issue.

In regards to the nailclippers....
I know of someone who was allowed to take clippers in her carryon bag only if the airport official broke off the nail file attachment. Otherwise, she would have had to leave it behind.
So, you might find a nailclipper without the file will be allowed.

Stef - guess what? I found an old pair of nail clippers and broke off the file myself. That was a good idea! Thanks. Guess I will take what I think I can and if they take it from me...Oh Well. It won't be expensive items anyway. Thanks Everyone. You really are a big help to a new traveler!

Probably? Why couldn't you take an emery board? I wouldn't try a sharp metal nail file, but an emery board is just cardboard covered with emery material, which is like very fine sandpaper.
