also is there anything else close by worth a trip? do they run any bus trips from cambridge to???

Sounds like you should have a built-in info source in your family; locals know all sorts of things you may not find in tour offices or books. Cambridge is a lovely city -
Punting on the river Cam, walking tour of the city or college; if you like horseracing, Newmarket is not far. Check these sites: www.visitbritain.com/destinations & www.visitcambridge.org Both have a wealth of info. about bus trips, travel passes, visitor cards, etc.

The Backs in Cambridge are wonderful - Ely and its cathedral are close by and would make a lovely day trip.

OMG I could go on and on. There is so much to see and do. Please consider Bury St. Edmunds, it is a great trip and just 2 (or 3?) easy train stops away. We've spent 3 summers there and are going back this July as well. I did a trip report ages ago, it is probably too much detail but if you have some time I have lots of suggestions for day trips as well as things to do in and around Cambridge.

I like the Fitzwilliam Museum (good classic art collection), and the Arts Cinema, which shows independant movies and foreign language films.

Audley End (big country house, Capability Brown gardens) is about 20 mins by train, though you would need a cab or bus from the station.

Here's another vote for Bury St. Edmunds. Didn't know it was accessible by train as we drove there from where DH was stationed TDY at Lakenheath.

One of our favorite places to visit. Following are a few pictures taken during our time there in 2003--we think it's a very special place and hope if you have time you do get to visit.

If the weather is nice, it is a pleasant walk to the village of Grantcxhester. You can also take a punt there down the river Cam. In Grantchester, there are several nice village pubs and the Orchard where you can get cream teas.

How about a day at the races?

Newmarket, as already mentioned, is the home of horseracing and has meets on April 16 and 17 starting at 2:00 PM. Go early and visit the National Horseracing Museum.

There is a courtesy bus which goes directly to the track from the Cambridge RR station. Don't know whether it's available to non RR travelers. If not, Newmarket does have its own station, 1.1 miles from the racecourse, and I'm sure there are other buses available from Cambridge.
