Joyce, We just returned from Rome. We took a cab from the Hotel Artimede to the airport which took about 40 minutes and cost about $40-50. I am not familiar with the trains but it seems in light of what is spent on the overall trip, it is a small price to pay for the convenience received. Frank

Joyce - Frank is absolutely correct about the cost of a taxi to the airport being worth it. In the past I had always taken the train but you still have the problem of getting to the station and the train is not always on time. I still take the train from the airport to the Termini. In October the train fare between the Termini and the airport was L16,000. My taxi ride was a fixed price arranged by my hotel. It was L72,000. I gave him L85,000 which is around US$43 - just like Frank estimated.

Joyce,

The same question was weighing on my mind - I´m leaving for Rome next Monday. I decided on a cab after talking to a colleague who just came back from a weekend trip to Rome. As she had very little luggage and her hotel was at walking distance from the Termini Station she took the train. Her husband was very cleverly pickpocketed as soon as they stepped off the train. Not a large sum, but nevertheless irritating.

On my departure I would certainly consider the train (took the metro to the airport in Mexico City once, no problems there) as I travel light and will probably have spent all my cash by then and will have nothing to lose (I don´t wear jewellery, don´t own a camera) if pickpocketed, but on arrival I would rather part with my money voluntarily in favour of a cab driver than involuntarily to a pickpocket.

Enjoy your trip anyway you decide to go!

Sartsa

Cab.

After a long transatlantic flight it's more than worth it to us. Agree with other prices ... roughly $35-$40 should cover the cab, rarely a shade more.

Careful on cost comparisons. Once you get to Termini on the train you'll have to subway/walk, or bus/walk, or find a cab (which isn't always easy at Termini.)

Nonetheless, with any of the options the direct cab will cost more, though perhaps not quite as much as one might think ... and well worth it.

Rome.Switzerland.Bavaria
www.twenj.com
just returned from rome. i would say the taxi is definately worth it and i can't even tell you how much it cost because when i'm dealing with foreign currency it's like monopoly money to me. i would take the taxi however because of the pickpockets/gypsies around the train station. they seem to be much worse in rome than anywhere else and seems like a tourist with lots of luggage they are trying to manuver is a likely target.

having said that also i will say that we took a train to Florence from the Termini station and back. (didn't have any luggage) when we came back we didn't have any problem getting a taxi back to our hotel from the Termini.

On 3 trips to Rome I've never had any problems with the airport train, nor have I had my pockets picked in the vicinity of the station, despite on 2 occasions being on my own and carrying a fair bit of luggage (bag on wheels, daypack, duty free). The airport train seems to run even when the other trains go on strike! At the end of our first trip my friend and I caught a cab (from Sheraton, Via Veneto) and it cost us about L90,000 (and that was in 1996). If you're not too loaded down with luggage and far from a metro stop, the cab is a better option.

We took train from airport to Termini; cab from 'official' stand just out front to hotel near Campo dei Fiori (even with a communication problem and detour to Pantheon it was $13 for cab). We took a cab from hotel back to airport (about $40) because our flight left at 7am and trains didn't run early enough. I'd do the train/cab combo if time permitted. I don't remember how much the train FCO to Termini cost.
