Buying RENFE tickets for someone else

Hi, I have yet another RENFE question. And by the way, I am sure I saw a RENFE thread here recently, but my search function just doesn't bring it up. This isn't the first search problem I've had recently.

But here's the RENFE question.
I am trying to purchase a ticket for my son from Oviedo to Madrid. On the website they ask me for the "datos del Comprador", but I'm the comprador and my son is the viajero and there doesn't seem to be anyway for this information to be inserted.

I apologize if this information already appears on other threads, but something must be the matter with my search function, or is it Fodor's problem?

Thanks, Laurie

I have just been researching buying RENFE tickets, and have found this: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g1...s.Online..html

It includes "Tickets are not individual, they are without name, so there is no problem if you buy tickets for your friends and input only your personal data online."

Ireynold1,
I have a tutorial (up at the top of page) on buying tickets on my web page at www.maribelsguides.com, but it doesn't include buying for someone else. It does include all the datos del comprador that you need. I purchase for others all the time, since the actually pdf ticket doesn't include the name of passenger. I just need all their personal info including c.c. 3 digit security code. Then I email them the pdf.

Thanks Padraig and Maribel,

The trip advisor information is very complete, thanks. I think I know the answer to this, but just to be sure -- in my case I wonīt be using my sonīs credit card (as you describe doing, Maribel, when you buy for other people), but rather using my credit card to buy a ticket I will then email to him for him to use. So, I just put in all my own personal information and credit card number and the ticket that gets issued can be used by him (or anyone)? Iīm a little skittish about this because we had a huge problem a few years ago -- I canīt remember the details but it involved me buying a ticket online and my daughter being unable to check in because she didnīt have my credit card. Or something like that.

Hi Ireynold1,
Under the old system, before the days of the pdf tickets than one can print out from home, first time purchasers on the old TIKNET system needed to pick up their tickets in Spain at any Renfe counter to "validate" their identity. When picking them up one needed to present the same c.c. used to make the purchase along with that localizer number. Once I forgot and left the c.c. at home that I had used to make the ticket purchase. The agent wouldn't issue my ticket. I had to buy a new one. But that system is no more...

I buy my husband's tickets with my credit card or he buys mine with his.

Yes, you can purchase your son's ticket with your credit card then email the pdf ticket to him. If the ticket purchase goes as it should, you'll be receive an email from [email protected] to confirm the purchase, along with the localizer number, and you can forward that to your son as well.

If your son were to lose the pdf ticket print out for some reason, with his localizer number he should be able to go online and print it again or pick up a new ticket by punching in his localizer number at a self service kiosk at a Renfe station.
