Buying property in Croatia
Hi, I'm researching the possibility of buying a property in Croatia as an investment either in Dubrovnik or Hvar. Has anyone experienced buying property in Croatia as a foreigner and could supply the name of a reputable real estate agent? Any advice or info or pitfalls to look out for would really help.

Hi
Istria is the peninsular jutting out in Croatia across from Italian. Acouple of its towns were beautiful, Rovenj and Porec. Both are coastal towns on the Adriatic. Used to belong to Italy and is bi-lingual. It gets European tourists and some Americans. The food was very good, a lot was Italian especially seafood. Both are right on the water, though I preferred Rovenj. I could easily get into a place there.

The www.visit-croatia.co.uk website has message boards, one of which relates to buying property in Croatia. The direct link to the boards is http://visitcroatia.proboards21.com/. In any case it is a terrific site for information on the many different ways to get to Croatia and getting around Croatia, and the General Travel Board is great for travel questions. We've had 2 trips to Croatia and it has been invaluable.

To everyone who has responded so far, thanks for the tips. So far I'm finding so many added costs involved in buying property and then there are more costs. found a Croatian law firm specialising in property law that could assist but they want $5000 US up front followed by $1,200 US per day for their services - so expensive !!

If it's anything like Greece, beware, anybody can say they own a property and are entitled to sell it to you, and they'll take your money (and they'll have references but who knows how genuine they are), but properties are not surveyed and registered and "titled" the way they are in other countries, so you don't know if what you pay for will actually be yours.
A friend of mine who has lived in Greece for 20 years just went through that, except a friend warned him off the deal at the last minute, and he found out he would have been paying for a plot to which two others and the communal government also had claims, he says it's a jungle. Sounds like Croatia might be the same way.
